Eurocrime! The Italian Cop and Gangster Films That Ruled the 70s UPC 850836-005102 | United States 2014 | 127 minutes | Cinema Epoch Eurocrime! is a movie documentary concerning the violent Italian “poliziotteschi” cinematic movement of the 1970s which, at first glance seems like just a bunch of cheap sleazy rip-offs of American crime films like DIRTY HARRY or THE GODFATHER. But on closer inspection, these films were really addressing distinctly Italian issues like the Sicilian Mafia and red terrorism. Through interviews with a “who’s who of action heavyweights,” (Rodney Perkins, Twitch), “a groovy-sleazy score and endless [film] clips” (Cheryl Eddy, San Francisco Bay Guardian). Eurocrime also chronicles the Italians’ breakneck methods of film production and shady bleed-over between real-life crime and movie crime. Eurocrime movies offer a tough, gritty world full of mustached, macho men killing each other brutally, beating up on (usually naked) women and racing their tiny cars down tiny alleyways.  And as this “lively documentary” (Dennis Harvey, Variety) proves, the behind-the-scenes stories were no less crazy and dangerous.
