I would like to get that also but will have to wait as I just can't afford that kind of money.  All i can do to just get dvds <G>

I've been renting Blu's a lot but when it has come to buying them, it's been very slow and steady - maybe 2% of my purchases are Blu. The main reason has been because of the very very low prices of used DVD's now has meant I can blind buy cheaper than a rental so I blind buy a lot that I have just a smidge of interest in. I've set my limit at £3 for blu's and still have over 100. Of course, I do go higher for favourites, but I am very patient and will happily wait for price drops. My average price of DVD's this year is £1.02 for example. My average price ten years ago in 2002 was £12.86.

It's funny, because my friends take the piss because I am 'tight' when it comes to buying movies despite the fact that because I don't have a family to support I have a disposable income. But hey, money in my pocket is better than money not in my pocket ;)

I live on a small island off the Scottish coast but go to the mainland regularly and go to a chain of pawn shops called Cash Converters. Their standard price is £1.00 for DVD's and I've picked up Masters of Cinema, Artificial Eye and reasonably new releases for that price from there. Just the other week I got Bridesmaids and 127 Hours for £1 a piece. I want them both on Blu, but I can wait. There is no rush for me.

Wow, thats cheap! You guys almost pay nothing for movies over there huh? I just gotta say something.
When it comes to movies (both blu's and dvd's) in Norway (where i live) the prices for dvd's would be
£15 for a new realise and £17-29 for a new blu realise. Thats one of the reasons i try to order most of
my movies at amazon etc, since its so f'n expencive in Norway.. And i see your reason to buy the dvds
but for me personally (after i upgraded my system to both 3D tv and 3D stereo) i've tried to buy mostly
on blu. And now most of the old classics are being transferd to blu (wich is great) but i like to wait to the
prices to drop aswell. In one of our local movie stores they always got great offers on blu. buy 3, pay for
only 2. Take 10blus pay £1 for each etc. And when it comes to earning alot of money. Money in your
pocket is better than no money in your pocket, i agree 100% no doubt. I am not one of the biggest
earners out there at all. And i dont have a gf\wife to provide for anymore.. But if you pay your bills in time
and got food on your table, and save some.. Why not use that on a movie you really want? I mean, i like to
wait to the prices drop too. And i use almost only amazon for my blu buys. :)

Well, I have all the movies I absolutely 100% want on DVD, so I can wait on prices on Blu. When I say they are so cheap, I am talking used of course. DVD's generally £10-15 on release, Blu £13-25 here. Give it 3 months and the DVD is usually £5-7 and the Blu £10. If it is new movies I have seen that I absolutely must have, I pick up the Blu, but those 5* movies are few and far between.

I got that :) And here aswell after a few months (or if the movies isnt popular at all) the prices drops.
So i'll wait for the prices to drop, but as you say. If there is a movie or a movieset i really want i'll
buy it, but i try to buy the most stuff on amazon. Since its cheaper than home. But Norway is
messed up taxwise. If i buy something in ONE order worth more than £20, i gotta pay EXTRA taxes
to the goverment here. (NOT COOL NORWAY) But amazon got some very good prices on their
movies, both new\old\used.. And i'm lucky enough to be good friends with the GM of the local
movie store i talked about. So i get an extra headup on stuff etc.. But when it comes to the Alfred Hitchcock
and James Bond, thats something i've said for years.. (If their movies are coming on somekind of blu collector edition set)
Thats something i want.. And now they are coming! To a very stiff priice tho.. But i both hope and think it will be worth
the money.  :-[

Although I really love James Bond since the very first one came to theaters .. i am not sure I could pay the price for the new package.  I am tempted for the Alfred Hitchcock though .. doubt my better half would appreciate it <G>

What I am watchin on 20sep12 -

Movies -

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
Set in the Victorian Age and regarded by many as the finest of the fourteen films in the Sherlock Holmes/Basil Rathbone series, "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" was originally released in 1939 by Twentieth Century-Fox.

Professor Moriarty (George Zucco) has at long last been brought to trial for murder. But the "Napoleon of Crime" is acquitted after the court finds a lack of sufficient evidence. Moments after the judge releases the defendant, Sherlock Holmes dashes into the courtroom with proof that will destroy Moriarty's alibi and send the professor to the gallows. Alas, he is too late and the criminal mastermind is set free.

Moriarty wastes no time in plotting his next crime, but in order to be successful he must divert the attention of the Great Detective. Enter Miss Ann Brandon (Ida Lupino), who calls on Holmes and his companion Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce) after she and her brother receive anonymous letters containing a drawing of a man with an albatross hung around his neck, and a date written above the picture. Their father received the same baffling letter years before and was found murdered on the date inscribed in his letter.

Are these mysterious letters but erroneous distractions? Are they clues to a case irrelevant to the exploits of the evil Professor Moriarty? Or are these portents of disaster inexorably linked to the master criminal's plan to commit a crime that will shake the very foundation of the British Empire? It is for Holmes and Watson to sort out the mystery and, hopefully, eliminate the menace of Professor Moriarty.

Complete Info

3.5 Staring Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes, Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson], the beautiful [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ida_Lupino]Ida Lupino and George Zucco as the feindish Professor Moriarty

Like there is only one Bond ... James Bond, there is only one Sherlock Holmes.  Sorry I don't make the rules ..

This is one of the great Sherlock Holmes movies.  A great period piece.  For 1938-1939 the direction and cinematography are good.  The editing is all choppy.  And the acting is quite fun.

Notorious
One of the greatest Hitchcock suspense films of all time, Notorious was nominated for two Academy Awards® in 1947 including Best Original Screenplay. It was also ranked among Variety's all-time box office champions and won a four-star rating from The Daily News. The New York Times honored Hitchcock and writer Ben Hecht by declaring, "Chalk up another smash hit for a fine and experienced team."

Alicia Huberman (Ingrid Bergman) gains notoriety when her father, a Nazi spy, is convicted of treason against the United States following World War II. Soon after, she throws a party which is crashed by a handsome stranger named Devlin (Cary Grant). After a clash of wit and temperament, Devlin reveals to Alicia that he is a U.S. intelligence agent and asks her to help him trap Nazi mastermind Alexander Sebastian. Because she has fallen in love with the dashing American agent, Alicia agrees and proceeds to endear herself to Sebastian. But as she becomes more and more involved in her work, Alicia may be putting her life in danger.

Complete Info

4.0 Staring Cary Grant the second of four appearances with Hitchcock, her second appearance for Hitchcock, the great Claude Rains .. can't forget his performance as the corrupt senator ... in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and of course The Invisible Man, and Leopoldine Konstantin.

This has to be one of Hitchcock's best films.  The story line, direction and cinematography are great.  Of course with a cast like this you would expect the acting to be top notch .. and it is.  I find little in this film that I don't like.

What I am watchin on 24sep12 -

Movies -

The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms
An A-bomb test in the Arctic awakens a gargantuan prehistoric dinosaur that makes New York City its stomping ground in the movie (from a story by Ray Bradbury and with superb special effects by Ray Harryhausen) that launched a string of Atomic Age creature features.

Complete Info

3.0 Staring Paul Christian (Paul Hubschmid), Paula Raymound, the very fun Cecil Kellaway .. i love hit part in Luck of the Irish among many others, Kenneth Tobey .. yep many notable roles for Tobey and very briefly Lee Van Cleef.

This is a good 50's sci-fi film.  Nothing spectacular .. but fun to watch.  You may have to had lived then to enjoy them as much.

Snow White and the Huntsman
From the producer of Alice in Wonderland comes a new vision that turns a legendary tale into an action-adventure epic. The evil Queen Ravenna (Academy Award® winner* Charlize Theron) will rule forever if she can take the life of Snow White (Kristen Stewart), so she dispatches the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) to track her down. But the wicked ruler never imagined that the Huntsman would train the girl to become a brave warrior, skilled in the art of war. Filled with intense battles and spectacular visual effects, Snow White & the Huntsman is a thrilling experience that "shouldn't be missed" (Shawn Edwards, Fox-TV).

*2003, Best Actress, Monster

Complete Info

3.5 Beautifully acted .. staring

Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, Sam Claflin, Sam Spruell brilliant as the queen's brother, and Ian McShane.

Kristen Stewart does a very good job here.  I always like her as Bella Swann in The Twilight Saga (still looking forward to the last bit), she was very good as Sarah a diabetic in Panic Room and in The Messengers.  I think she is becoming a very fine actress .. but it will be hard for her to break out of these types of roles.

Chris Hemsworth is also excellent in this film as the Huntsman.  Loved him in Thor and The Avengers though I am not sure about how the remake of Red Dawn will be.

But maybe Charlize Theron stole the show here.  She is evil personified in this film.  Although this is a fantasy film and will never get a nod, i can see how she could be nominated for an Oscar for her performance.  Simply brilliant.

This is a great film and I will watch it many times.  The only bad thing about it is that it came out during the same year as that dreadful "Mirror Mirror" (i wont even bother finding a link for you .. I feel it more than wasted 106 minutes of my life sigh).. oh my Roberts sucked in that one.

The Paradine Case
There have been many courtroom dramas over the years, but none quite like The Paradine Case. The masterful collaboration of producer David O. Selznick and director Alfred Hitchcock brings tension to an all-time high in this powerful and dramatic film.

The lovely Mrs. Paradine (Ann Todd) is accused of poisoning her older, blind husband. She hires lawyer Anthony Keane (Gregory Peck) to represent her. Though Keane is married to a striking and devoted woman, he finds himself strangely attracted to his glamorous defendant. His deepening feelings convince him she is innocent, even though the evidence and his usual sense of logic and reason might suggest otherwise.

Complete Info

3.5 Staring Gregory Peck, Ann Todd, Alida Valli, Charles Coburn,
Charles Laughton and Leo G. Carroll.

This is a great 'courtroom' (early Perry Mason) drama.

Gregory Peck is brilliant in this as Anthony "Tony" Keane, Counsel for the Defense.  Of course Peck has been in so many magnificent films listing them here would be silly.  Ann Todd plays his wife.  I don't recognize anything else she had done but she is very good in this role.

Alida Villi is brilliant in her role as Mrs. Maddalena Anna Paradine, the woman accused of murdering her husband.  Villi was also very good in The Third Man and The Miracle of the Bells.

The romance grows between Peck and Villi .. while Todd becomes more and more jealous.  This is a very well directed film and editing / filming is smooth.  Script is good ..

This is another of my favorite Hitchcock films.

Yes, Kristen Stewart has found herself typecast now because of the success of Twilight. I've not seen Twilight, but do own it but thought she was great in Panic Room and The Messengers also. I recommend checking out "Welcome to the Rileys" though - a very down film, but worth a watch. Co-stars James Gandolfini. There is a review of it in my movie marathon thread...

EDIT: Yep, thought I'd reviewed it - http://www.dvdcollectorsonline.com/index.php/topic,6328.msg154831.html

Thanks for the reviews - I still want to check out Snow White, but not had the chance as of yet. It's shame that the on-set affair between Kristen Stewart and the director has been in the papers so much here (British director) it has taken away the shine from the movie.
