Now this is from my rememberances of the other two films ... (hmm guess i have to go back and watch them again .. oh thanks for that  :) )

Of the three, I think I like The Illusionist the best.  I would put The Prestige and Death Defying Acts close seconds.

"Death Defying Acts" is a little more of a 'romance' film than the other two .. if you know what I mean.  But if you like magic and a bit of history (well there was a man named Harry Houdini) then you should like this.

I found it because I was looking for things with Saoirse Ronan.  But really liked Guy Pearce's performance in this.  And as I mentioned Zeta-Jones surprised me.
Thank you

Fat Man and Little Boy
In the remote desert of New Mexico, "The Manhattan Project" is materializing – the World War II effort to build the atomic bomb. Oscar®-winner Paul Newman* (Hud, Nobody's Fool) stars as General Leslie Groves, the military man in charge of a massive project that will produce two weapons: "Fat Man" and "Little Boy." Dwight Schultz (The Temp, Star Trek: First Contact) is J. Robert Oppenheimer, the brilliant scientist attempting to bring the startling mission to fruition. And Bonnie Bedelia, John Cusack, Laura Dern and Natasha Richardson co-star in this "stunning ... profoundly moving" film (Michael Medved, Sneak Previews) that re-creates one of history's most compelling chapters ... one that resulted in the mushroom-shaped specter that changed the world forever.

*Best Actor, The Color Of Money, 1986.

This is really a 'fair' film.  Although it deals with actual events in our (us) history, I think the script is slow and unfulfilling.

I like most of the characters and with a few exceptions they are portrayed well.  It follows the history 'fairly accurately' with a few exceptions.

But over all it is .. just another movie.  Don't think i will watch it again.

The Prestige
Award-winning actors Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Michael Caine and Scarlett Johansson star in The Prestige, the twisting, turning story that, like all great magic tricks, stays with you. Two young, passionate magicians, Robert Angier (Jackman), a charismatic showman, and Alfred Borden (Bale), a gifted illusionist, are friends and partners until one fateful night when their biggest trick goes terribly wrong. Now the bitterest of enemies, they will stop at nothing to learn each other's secrets. As their rivalry escalates into a total obsession full of deceit and sabotage, they risk everything to become the greatest magician of all time. But nothing is as it seems, so watch closely. And be prepared to watch it again and again.

As i have said some where else .. I love magicians and films about magic.  I really like "The Prestige" and think it is a great watch.  The characters are involved and carry off the complex script quite well.

Hugh Jackman is very good in this film .. not too much 'Jackman'.  I really enjoy the complexity of the film.

And any film with bits of Nikola Tesla is very OK by me.

I just watched this film again because I was discussing this film in relation ship to the recently watched Death Defying Acts and the great The Illusionist.  My answer was .. I thought they rated as .. The Illusionist first and Death Defying Acts and this one, The Prestige being tied for second.  Having just re-watched "The Prestige" I still think that that rating holds.

The Company
THE COMPANY is "a completely new kind of film" raves Anna Kisselgoff of The New York Times, a fascinating look at the world of dance, with the cooperation of the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago. Legendary director and Oscar® nominee Robert Altman (2001 Best Director, Best Picture, Gosford Park; 1975 Best Director, Best Picture, Nashville), takes us into the world of the dancers whose professional and personal lives clash as they cope with the demands of a life in the ballet. Neve Campbell (Scream, TV's "Party of Five") plays a gifted but conflicted company member on the verge of becoming a principal dancer at a fictional Chicago troupe. Golden Globe® winner James Franco (Spider-Man, TV's "James Dean") co-stars as Campbell's boyfriend, a master chef who provides romance and refuge from the watchful eye of the pompous artistic director played by Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange).

4.0 Staring

Robert Altman as usual creates a visual feast .. great cinematography, editing and direction.  Malcolm McDowell is a great task master.

And Neve Campbell .. one again she has captured my heart.  Having begun her career as a ballet dancer she is perfect for the role.  Though I can't really see her as a classical ballet dancer .. her body screams too much 'woman'.  But she is very good as a member of a dance company.

I had forgotten this film but found it while filling in my Neve Campbell section.  So glad that i did.

The Ladykillers
Academy Award®-winning Tom Hanks* turns in a hilariously original performance in The Ladykillers, the laugh-out-loud comedy that explodes with outrageous wit and slapstick humor from the Coen Brothers (O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Fargo). Underneath Professor G.H. Dorr's (Hanks) silver-tongued southern gentleman persona is a devious criminal who's assembled a motley gang of thieves to commit the heist of the century by tunneling through his churchgoing landlady's root cellar to a casino's vault of riches. But these cons are far from pros. As their scheme begins blowing up in their faces, their landlady smells a rat. And when she threatens to call the police, they figure they'll just bump her off. After all, how hard can that be? Wickedly funny from start to finish, it would be a crime to miss The Ladykillers.

*Best Actor, Forrest Gump, 1994; Philadelphia, 1993.

3.5 Staring

First, I have been asked before if I ever saw the original The Ladykillers with the great cast of  Alec Guinness, Cecil Parker, Herbert Lom, Peter Sellers, Danny Green, Jack Warner and Katie Johnson.  To this I have said .. yes.  And to me the original is the best.  But having said that .. there are those I know that do/would like the remake more than the original.  The original was a 1955 British black comedy and for that reason some of the 'humor' would be lost.

Okay .. having said that this film has some very funny bits.

Although Tom Hanks does a 'serviceable' job in this, but I don't really think is is the best role for him.  Sometimes during the film I wonder about his mannerisms etc.

I do really like J. K. Simmons and Ryan Hurst in their roles .. and Irma P. Hall does a very funny job in her role.

Like I said .. the original is the best .. but for those who have not seen it OR for a different take on the story this is a funny film.

Princess of Thieves
Sherwood Forest has a courageous new hero — Gwyn, the daughter of Robin Hood — in this thrilling new adventure packed with swashbuckling fun for the whole family. Possessing the cunning skills of her legendary father and the beauty and intelligence of her mother Marion, Gwyn (Keira Knightley, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace) is anxious to follow in Robin Hood's footsteps. But he'd rather see her remain safely behind under the watchful eye of Friar Tuck and her best friend Froderick. As King Richard nears death, Robin Hood and his Merry Men are summoned to help bring Richard's son Prince Philip to his rightful place on the throne before the evil Prince John can assume power. But when Robin Hood is captured by the Sheriff of Nottingham (Malcolm McDowell, My Life So Far) and sentenced to death, his life and the future of England lie in Gwyn's inexperienced hands.

Complete Info

2.0 Staring

This is a horrible movie.  I couldn't get into it, has no relationship with any of the characters and .. oh my.  It was a movie simply to promote a female 'robin hood' and couldn't even be the slightest original.  For all the cast and crew .. this is to them what 'Labyrinth' is to Tom Cruise (well that is not exactly fair as that was probably Tom's best acting job)

Don't waste your time even looking at the cover .. in fact this 'review' is the best you will get from this movie.

I had never seen or heard of this film before and picked it up to fill in my Neve Campbell section ..

A little naked (the worst shower scene ever) .. a little lesbo (slang here intended as incitement of this film only) action ..

This film tries to be 'art' and even fails at being that.  I did watch it to the end, though i started to turn it off halfway.  It did get better about 3/4s of the way through the film.  The ending was interesting .. but ..

This is the second film in a row that I have given 2.0 .. in fact I have never done that before .. i can usually justify something better but not here.

RUN .. do not watch this film.

004 - Elementary - S01E04 - The Rat Race
Holmes and Watson take on a case that involves the death of a Wall Street executive overdosed on heroin, in spite of Holmes' dislike of bankers. Also, Watson tries to resume her dating.

TV.Com Episode Info

3.5 When a Wall Stree executive is murdered only Holmes believes it is murder.  Many people would wonder why he would care with his hatred of bankers.

This is the fourth episode of this great series.  I like the character played by Jonny Lee very much and Lucy Liu is great in her role.

I believe that with these strong characters they didn't need to play the 'sherlock' card.  But that being what was done I still like this show.  Good stories and follow through.

There she reconnects with Sheriff Dewey (David Arquette) and Gale (Courteney Cox), who are now married, as well as her cousin Jill (Emma Roberts). I gave this a 3.5 as I think it is just about as good as the original.  Storyline has some good bits and the dialog is not that bad.  Direction is smooth and consistent.

Loved seeing Anna Paquin in a cameo similar to Drew Barrymore's cameo in the original Scream.

If you like good slasher films .. then this is a good one.

I don't know if this is 'true' or just another story about Alfred Hitchcock .. but this film is well done.  I enjoyed it very much.

Great cast and performances .. storyline very good.

Factory Girl
In the 1960s, no star burned brighter than original "It" girl Edie Sedgwick. Starring Sienna Miller (Casanova) in a "captivating, compelling and absurdly sexy" performance (Terry Lawson, Detroit Free Press), Factory Girl follows Edie's meteoric rise from art student to the top of New York's fashion scene. As the muse of pop artist Andy Warhol (Guy Pearce), Edie paid a steep price for fame. An intoxicating journey through pop-culture history, Factory Girl takes us inside Warhol's legendary studio, where the worlds of art, fashion and celebrity all collided.

3.5 Staring

I don't know how true this is .. read a few quick bio bits and seems straight.

It is a mid-late 60's piece about New York and the Andy Warhol period.  It was totally different here on the U.S. West Coast.  Very different .. didn't really have the 'beautiful people'.

Interesting story, like "Gia" about a persons fall from great heights by great demons.  With the help of takers like Warhol.  Someone should have shot him ..

Deception
Leave your inhibitions at the door as Hugh Jackman (X-Men trilogy) and Michelle Williams (Brokeback Mountain) lure Ewan McGregor (Moulin Rouge!) into a tangled web of lust and lies in this scorching erotic thriller.

Lonely, timid accountant Jonathan McQuarry (McGregor) lives only for his work – until a chance meeting with suave, charismatic, corporate lawyer Wyatt Bose (Jackman) introduces him to "The List." Suddenly, the right cell-phone number and the words, "are you free tonight," launch Jonathan on a decadent journey of sexual conquests and self-discovery amidst New York's power elite. But an affair with a ravishing and mysterious stranger (Williams) will expose him to yet another world he never imagined: one of betrayal, treachery and murder!

Wikipedia Film Info

3.5 Staring

This is a well done thriller.  Ewan Mcgregor is great in this .. as usual.  I do for moments get tired of his sometimes wimpy character but then he does something good.  Hugh Jackman is very food in this one but I don't think he is really believable as a bad guy.

I like the filming and direction.  The story line is good without giving much away.

Over all i really like this one.  It is one that goes in my list as a re-watch.

The Flock
Erroll Babbage (Richard Gere) has spent his career tracking sex offenders, and his unorthodox methods are nearly as brutal as the criminals he monitors. When he links one of his deranged parolees to the disappearance of a local girl, he and his new partner (Claire Danes) must scour the S&M underground to find her before it's too late.

Directed in blistering style by international sensation Andrew Lau ('Internal Affairs'), 'The Flock' is an intense, hi-octane thriller that dares to enter the frighteningly real world of sexual deviants and those who must stop them.

Wikipedia Film Info

3.5 Staring

At first I wasn't sure i was going to like the film.  The characters and what they were going through .. i didn't like it.  But as the film moved on I liked it more and more.  The characters became more human .. the situations more real.

I never know if I am going to like Richard Gere's performance but in this one I think it was very very good.  And Clare Danes .. what can you say .. so talented and so beautiful.

I really like this one over all .. a good watch .. and i would/will watch it again.

The Fountain
Yesterday, today, tomorrow. Past, present, future. Through time and space, one man embarks on a bold 1000-year odyssey to defeat humankind's most indomitable foe: Death.

Hugh Jackman plays that man, devoted to one woman (Rachel Weisz) and determined to protect her from forces that threaten her existence. His quest leads him to a Tree of Life...and to an adventure into eternity. Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem for a Dream) directs, continuing his string of imaginative, involving filmmaking with a tale alive with ideas and filled with astonishing vistas. "Not many films can blow your mind and break your heart at the same time, but this one will" (Drew McWeeny, Ain't It Cool News).

This is a great visual feast from director Darren Aronofsky who brought us Pi and Black Swan among others.

I really like this one and have to get it on Blu-Ray for the effects.

The Langoliers
Something bizarre has happened aboard flight #29...a nightmare so chilling, so frightening, so unrelenting it could only come from the mind of Stephen King. Now the master storyteller of our time gives terror a new name in THE LANGOLIERS. A jet leaves on a red-eye flight from Los Angeles to Boston. But early in the flight, ten passengers awaken to a startling realization: All of the other passengers have vanished – and the ground below is only...ground. But once they manage to land the plane, the situation doesn't improve. No one is there...the air is still...the clocks have stopped...and a dread, evil presence bent on their destruction is headed straight for them. Based on the novella from the best-selling anthology Four Past Midnight, Patricia Wettig (City Slickers II), Bronson Pincho (Beverly Hills Cop), Dean Stockwell (The Player) and David Morse (The Getaway) stare into the jaws of oblivion in this nightmare from the mind of Stephen King.

I don't know why I like this film (tv miniseries) but I do (sigh).  It is not particularly the implementation of Stephen King's short story (from Four Past Midnight.  And the filming and acting is not the greatest, although some of the performances are not that bad.

There is just something about it.  Maybe it is the character of of Craig Toomey.  The complete breakdown.  Bronson Pinchot did a great job of this.

But there you have it .. if you haven't seen it then do at your own risk.  If you have seen it then you know.

The Simpsons: The Complete Second Season: Disc Two

023 - The Simpsons - S02E10 - Bart Gets Hit by a Car
"Bart Gets Hit by a Car" is the tenth episode of The Simpsons' second season. It originally aired on the Fox network in the United States on January 10, 1991. At the start of the episode, Bart is hit by Mr. Burns' car. Prompted by ambulance chasing lawyer Lionel Hutz and quack doctor Dr. Nick Riviera, the Simpsons sue Mr. Burns, seeking extensive damages for Bart's injuries. Hutz and Dr. Nick exaggerate Bart's injuries so they can gain sympathy at the trial. Marge is against the lawsuit, and she grows concerned with Homer's behavior and the fact that he is asking Bart to lie.

"Bart Gets Hit by a Car" was written by John Swartzwelder and directed by Mark Kirkland. The episode's plot was based on Billy Wilder's 1966 film The Fortune Cookie. Much of the ending of the show was pitched by executive producer James L. Brooks, who felt the episode needed a more emotional ending. The episode includes the debuts of three recurring characters, Lionel Hutz, Dr. Nick and the Blue-Haired Lawyer. The devil is also shown for the first time. Recurring guest star Phil Hartman makes his first appearance as Hutz. The show's then-script supervisor Doris Grau also voices a character in the show for the first time.

Scream 2
Here's the incredible follow-up to the smash hit phenomenon Scream!  Away at college, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell – Scream, TV's Party Of Five) thought she'd finally put the shocking murders that shattered her life behind her...until a copycat killer begins acting out a real-life sequel!  Now, as history eerily repeats itself, ambitious reporter Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox – Scream, Scream 3), deputy Dewey (David Arquette – Scream, Scream 3) and other Scream survivors find themselves trapped in a terrifyingly clever plotline where no one is safe – or beyond suspicion!  Director Wes Craven (Scream) and hit-making writer Kevin Williamson (Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer) team up once again and deliver the big screen's hippest, coolest, edgiest thrill-ride ever!

3.5 Staring

I had forgotten that Sarah Michelle Gellar was in this one.  I always love watching her .. it was fun to see here in this.  Hated to see her sliced and diced.

Of course the only thing worse in this film that Pinkett (luckily she is in it only a few minutes) are the bits with Tory Spelling .. groan.  Must be another bit of the film making fun of itself.  I just don't get it.

I really like this, the second in the film series.  Although you always tend to know what is going on the script, direction and music/sound do a great job of continuing to build suspense.  And the ending is great.  Lots of bits to throw suspicion here and there but in the end ...

This is almost as good as the original.   Another stong recommendation for this one.

Thank you

Didn't Sidney joke in the first movie, that with her luck, someone like Tori Spelling would be playing her, if her life gets made into a movie. At least this is how I remember it. So yes, this is another bit of the film making fun of itself.

Fun to see Jay and Silent Bob and Carrie Fisher in a cameos.

This film has more comedy bits in it that the first two do AND less actual violence.  Having said that I like this one almost as much as the first.  Fun script, dealing with the actors of "Stab 3" being killed in the same order as they are in the movie.  This is a great parody of the entire film series.

I still like the characters (even the new ones) and enjoy the jobs done by the actors very much.

Although not as scarey as the first two, this is a very good who-dun-it film.

The Breakfast Club
They were five teenage students with nothing in common, faced with spending a Saturday detention together in their high school library.  At seven a.m., they had nothing to say, but by four p.m., they had bared their souls to each other and become good friends.

John Hughes, creator of the critically acclaimed Sixteen Candles, wrote, directed and produced this hilarious and often touching comedy starring Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, and Ally Sheedy.  To the outside world they were simply the Jock, the Brain, the Criminal, the Princess, and the Kook, but to each other, they would always be The Breakfast Club.

Okay .. that is out of the way .. again .. I like this film.  There are some great bits in it and it follows in the tradition of Tales from the Crypt TV series.  It looks and feels like a TV show .. but I think the point was to have the same type of imagry.

The script, characters and actors perform very well .. If you like Tales from the Crypt comics or Tales from the Crypt TV series the this is for you.  Spooky thriller with a touch of black humor.

Tales from the Crypt Presents: Deadly Duo: Demon Knight & Bordello of Blood
The hardest-working stiff in show biz, the Cryptkeeper, presents a deadly double feature packed with horror, humor, sex appeal and go-for-the-jugular special effects that'll chill you to the funny bone.

Tales from the Crypt Presents: Bordello of Blood stars Dennis Miller, supermodel Angie Everhart, Erika Eleniak and Chris Sarandon in a fiendish frightmare about a house of "kill" repute where luscious ladies of the evening don't just take money for services rendered — they bleed you dry!

3.5 Staring

I remember seeing this one on the big screen when it first came out.  I liked it then and I still like it.  This is more humorous than creepy/thrilling and the black humor really comes through.

If i changed anything it might be someone other than Dennis Miller.  But that is just a personal thing.

I really do like the ending ..

The Day
Open war against humanity rages. Five survivors, lost and on the run. The pursuit is relentless, the bullets are dwindling and the battle is everywhere. This is a 24hr look into their lives. Fight or die.

3.5 Staring

Pretty bleak apocalyptic view after an attack by 'something'.  Good script, characters and direction.  Actors all do a very good job.

This is a very good film.  Well worth the watch (and owning).

Mixed Nuts
'Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house, the only creatures stirring were a transvestite, a homicidal Santa, a serial killer, the staff of a suicide hot line and a very crazy pregnant woman.

3.5 Staring

A very funny film, dry humor and sometimes to near dark comedy.

Great performances with outstanding bits by Gary Shandling as the horrible landlord, Madeline Kahn as the wonderful Mrs. Munchnik, Liev Schreiber as a transvestite, and Juliette Lewis .. With great supporting bits.  This really has a great cast.  And bits with Jon Stewart

You can really tell that this is the beginning of Adam Sandler's career.  Next film is "Billy Madison" and he seems to be just practicing for that role.

Steve Martin is at his best (and furthest from Pink Panther horror fest).

This is a strong watch .. if you like dry comedy with not so suttle grownup bits .. then this is the film for you.

Thank you
David

3.5 Good opening episode.  It moves quickly with minimal character development but it is standard superhero faire .. something happens to rich spoiled guy .. he turns good .. saves the world.

The characters are good and there appears to be good actors in the roles.

Look forward to this series.

Meanwhile, Oliver’s mother and Walter push Oliver to take a position at the company.
