Today - like last year - I took "inventory". Today - like last year - I promised myself to reduce my DVD shoppings until I catch up with the unwatched. This year - like last year - I will fail. ;)

This years statistic looks like this:

total: 724 DVDs (100%) (+143 [+24.6%] since Oct 7th, 2006)
Movies: 546 out of 724 (75.4%)
TV Shows: 178 out of 724 (24.6%)
Full Seasons: 133 out of 178 (74.7%)
TV Show Specials/Movies: 45 out of 178 (25.3%)

unwatched total: 204 out of 724 (28.2%)
unwatched Movies: 135 out of 204 (66.2%), 135 out of 546 (24.7%)
unwatched TV Shows: 69 out of 204 (33.8%), 69 out of 178 (38.8%)
unwatched Full Seasons: 46 out of 69 (66.7%), 46 out of 133 (34.6%)
unwatched TV Show Specials/Movies: 23 out of 69 (33.3%), 23 out of 45 (51.1%)

never watched total: 33 out of 204 (16.1%), 33 out of 724 (4.6%)
never watched Movies: 19 out of 33 (57.6%), 19 out of 546 (3.5%)
never watched TV Shows: 14 out of 33 (42.4%), 14 out of 178 (7.9%)
never watched Full Seasons 2 out of 14 (14.3%), 2 out of 133 (1.5%)
never watched TV Show Specials/Movies: 12 out of 14 (85.7%), 12 out of 45 (26.7%)

I'm successfully making my collection decrease and it's value increase! For instance, this morning my collection stood at 790. I now have three new films and the collection has reduced to 789...  :wacko:

Marvellous! How have I managed that then? I am frequently looking for old titles I'm not bothered about and putting them on Ebay, but I haven't done that today. Yet the number went down...  :hmmmm:

Simple really. I only give numbers to what I actually pay for. So a boxset gets a number, the contents do not. Today I bought a boxset of three movies: 'Ice Age', 'Robots' and 'Chicken Run'. I already had 'Ice Age' and 'Chicken Run' though, so I've removed two from the collection and replaced them with three-in-one.  :devil: Cheating I know, but I love these collections (I recently replaced 'Shaun of the Dead' with one containing that and 'American Werewolf in London' and 'The Frighteners'). I have quite a few now. The ones I replace I can sell and claw back some money; for instance, the set I bought today was £6, so if I get a couple of quid for the two I had, 'Robots' will have cost £2-£3 and I have more shelf space...

Here in germany prices for new DVDs are crashing fast. New movies costs about 20€. Often you get it for under 10€ within 6 months. Thus the prices you get on eBay & co. are not worth the trouble. Even if you don't watch the movie why do the work of making an auction if you get 1 or 2€ out of it? And then you get pissed on the leg because you charged 2€ for shipping and the stamp says only 1.65€. Ain't worth it. Unfortunatley there is a trend in germany and it got the name by an electronic market "Geiz is geil!" (roughly: "costiveness is phat!"). Although the prices at this store aren't really low they've put that idea into the mind of the people. Quality doesn't matter anymore. Quality is expensive. Cheap is good. :(  :'(

As for counting: I assign each movie a number and each season box. A movie box set gets no number. Since I use the "watched" feature I add the discs of the season because of the cover art. They get no number either.

For some discs I have special solutions, e.g. I bought 8 discs of "Thunder in Paradise" (cheesy one-seasoner with Hulk Hogan, but I like it ;)). I added a "virtual box set" and that got the number but not the single discs. The first box of Sliders contains two seasons, so I added to child profiles, each getting a number but the real box didn't.

I even got a tag "no number" for entries without a number, makes it easier to filter and to count.

This years statistic looks like this:

Did you count that all yourself, or do you have a nice little tool you feel strangely compelled to share with us?  :P

I've got tags and calc.exe ;)

For TV Shows I've got the following tags:

+ TV Show
++ Season or Series Box
++ Season Box Disc
++ Virtual Box

Then I've got a tag to filter items without a number (see previous post)
+ No Number

And then I've got two tags indicating watch state (I've used them since before I used the watched feature)
+ Unwatched
++ Never Watched

With these it was very easy ;)

Ebay prices are rubbish these days, but I monitor other peoples auctions to see which ones are worth putting on.

A few weeks ago I got one the three disc sets I was talking about, to replace a couple of mine (Stripes and Uncle Buck, + Brewster's Millions as the new boy). Today I got a couple of quid for Uncle Buck, but £5 for Stripes. The boxset only cost £5.99, so I'm up on that one!

Nope need just shy of 300 to do that myself so won't be doing that until sometime into next year, unless there's a serious bargain going somewhere.

I thought I'd make the 500 club before the end of the year but I'm short about 75 titles and I decided to save money for something else so I don't think I'll make it.
