I'm used to that. It's rare that the source of my movie is the original negative, since the genre of movie that I buy the most is not really respected. Many was not stored in a vault, even when they were a lot of negative was thrown in the garbage because the location fee was not paid.
I think a famous example for this is "The Wicker Man", which' original cut's negatives supposedly ended up as landfill under a highway (the M5...?). They eventually were able to assemble an extended cut using prints they found...
