« on: April 24, 2008, 11:23:02 PM »
OK... what do you guys think... what kind of movie marathon should I have this weekend?
Please Note that I would like to start my marathon sometime tomorrow (Friday).

Choices:

Director: John Carpenter A marathon of some of the movie I have that was directed by John Carpenter. I really don't have that many (surprisingly)... I have...

   1.  Christine
   2. Cigarette Burns
   3. Escape from LA
   4. The Fog
   5. Ghost of Mars
   6. Halloween
   7. In the Mouth of Madness
   8. They Live
   9. The Thing
  10. Vampires
  11. Village of the Damned

Ghosts/Hauntings Pretty much a marathon of anything dealing with hauntings. I have a load of these to choose from...

Original vs. Remake
I really want that you realize that most of the time a remake is a bad idea
So it's sure that I suggest this one for your weekend  ;)

I say Original vs Remake. I'd be really interested in knowing how you would compare the originals to the remake.

But I don't agree with Jimmy's statement that a remake is most often a idea. Most may have been handled badly, but the remake itself isn't such a bad idea.  ;)

You seriously need to buy more Bullock movies :p

There has been times that I actually preferred the remake to the original.  :bag:

No shame in that, I often do that (Gone in 60 Seconds, Ocean's 11, ...)

I don't hate all the remake and you don't need to be ashame
By exemple those remake are better than the original (in my opinion) : Invasion of the body snatcher (1976), The Thing (1982) and ....

You're both bloody mad.  ???

I like the remake, but... better!!??!! No, no, no, no, noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

Usually I'd retreat and say, to each his own, but Jimmy? I'm really surprised! You prefer the soulless, Hollywood machine, cash-in remake? Blimey.

In a general sense, a remake is never bad. Sometimes they're better and become the definitive version (The Maltese Falcon, Ben Hur), sometimes they are a lot of fun and form a nice companion piece to the original, and most of the time, they are nowhere near as good and simply become a detailed trailer for the original. I haven't seen the new 3:10 to Yuma, but at the very least it's brought attention to the wonderful simple story that previously always seemed lost in High Noon's shadow.

All that doesn't stop me from being really pissed that they are trying to remake The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3... :-[

Dawn of the dead is the zombie movie made by romero that I like the less. The basic idea is good, but the movie has too much slapstick for me to take it seriously. Not that everything is perfect in the remake (too many characters, the dog) but at least the film is more serious. My big problem was the running zombie but I've decide to accept it.

The beginning of the movie is great, I'm sure that you will agree with me on this

Fair enough! :hysterical:

I do like the remake very much. Best remake of recent years, by a long way. But the original is sublime. It aims for a much higher target and still scores a perfect hit. The slapstick is one of the cleverest elements, because throughout all Romero's zombie movies, he's substituting us for the zombies... trapped in the shops, wandering aimlessly, and bumping into each other without a care. I also like how the relationships between the characters -and how they handle the zombies forever circling their new home- becomes mundane and even boring, so that when the walls do come down, the complacency is shattered all the more brutally. And the theme is great!

Before my next comment, I must stress, I do like Zack Snyder's movie. It's fantastic. But Shaun of the Dead was still better!  :P

Just some exemple of remake on the works don't tell me that it sound like good ideas :

The Day the earth stood still (with Keenu Reeves in the leading role )
Nightmare on elm street and Friday the 13th (for those two why a remake and not another part?)

I voted for the John Carpenter marathon, but seriously, where's Escape From New York(You've gotta love the German title for this film - Die Klapperschlange 8)) and Big Trouble In Little China?
