The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones
« on: August 23, 2013, 04:06:16 AM »

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones from the book series The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare was a very good take on the first book.  There were of course some bits not in the book .. or changed but the flavor was there (which is what I look for).

The actors:
  • Lily Collins
  • Jamie Campbell Bower
  • Robert Sheehan
  • Kevin Zegers
  • Lena Headey
  • Kevin Durand
  • Aidan Turner
  • Jemima West
  • Godfrey Gao
  • C. C. H. Pounder
  • Jared Harris
  • Jonathan Rhys Meyers

were mainly new to me (with the exception of C. C. H. Pounder, Kevin Durand and Jonathan Rhys Meyers) and all were very good in their roles.

The visuals are very very good (lots of cgi so take that into consideration).  The story does take a bit to get into as there are some complexities.  If there is a weak point it is the music.  Not that the majority of the music isn't very good ... or taken separately the songs would be good ... but to my taste many of the songs gave the film a feeling of something developed for 'The CW' (tv network).  It gave it a feeling of 'Roswell' or any other *teen angst* driven show.

Having said that I will be seeing it again and i really hope they do the other 2 books.  It wont be a phenom like "Twilight" but to my taste the books and film are a little better.
Thank you
David

I think I want to see this one.  I do have the first book...I just haven't read it yet.

They really are pretty good books with good storylines.  Not really derivative of anything else though there are werewolves and vampires they aren't the main focus.  It is a *teen* coming of age type story but that really passes quickly and there isn't the continued angst of Twilight.  My problem with the film is that they are really trying to market to kids and with a little bit of change it would have worked well with those not pre-pub :D

I've seen it now.  I did like it.  I still haven't read the book...I have a feeling things were changed.  I do wonder if something was dealt with in the book that is sort of hinted at briefly and then just dropped.

I haven't started on a review to post on Epinions yet, but I will do one.

If you get a chance read the books .. wait ... i say that about every one <G>

Although there are some changes I don't think it was enough to change the storyline.  My daughter who basically remembers everything she reads was pretty happy with it in comparison also.  Definitely looking forward to the second one
