Overview
As the Summer of Love faded to the winter of our national discontent in the fall of 1968, Inspector Erskine (Efrem Zimbalist, Jr.), Special Agent Colby (William Reynolds), and Assistant Director Ward (Philip Abbott) continue to battle the nation's enemies, foreign and domestic. Delivering drama at the height of its powers, The FBI's well-oiled machine of TV talent continued to draw in the star power – both the iconic and the up-and-coming, from golden age great Ralph Bellamy (as a Nazi sympathizer!) to soon-to-be TV superstar Chad Everett (as a psycho wannabe Vietnam War hero). Other faces found among the cases of extortion, espionage, kidnapping and killing include Dawn Wells, Susan Strasberg, Dorothy Provine, Cicely Tyson, Lynda Day and Gene Tierney as well as Dean Stockwell, Robert Duvall, Harrison Ford, James Caan, and a young teen Ronny Howard.
My thoughts
This show was reportedly made on special request from FBI director J. Edgar Hoover in order to paint a bright picture of his organisation. It does that, and as such you have to take it with a grain of salt (or more). Still, it is a very well written show, and quite enjoyable. Efrem Zimbalist Jr had been acting for 20 years when this show started, but it was this show that really made him famous.
The show was produced by Quinn Martin, and has a rather typical format for his shows, prolog, 4 acts and an epilog. Also a narrator and the typical "Tonight's Episode" which was so famously parodied in the "Police Squad!" TV show. Like most seasons, season 4 consists of 26 hour-long episodes (or rather 50 something minutes sans commercials).
This title is part of Warner's Archive collection, i e they are made on demand. The quality is very good, though. I can't see any difference between these and other "normal" TV show releases. It's pretty expensive, though, with a list price of $59.99. But you can get them a lot cheaper. I purchased this from
ImportCDs.com
for $38.02, a much more reasonable price.
I really enjoy this show and I would say that it is highly recommended.

This was a great show, at least a I remember it. And Quinn Martin seems to have been a fine producer.
