Topic: Star Trek 2: Into Darkness (2013)

Anyone else excited by the teaser released this week?

"Video does not exist"  Which is the same as everything else I've heard about the movie.

I haven't been seeing/hearing/reading anything about this movie at all so far.

For all I knew it was put on hold.

I saw this for the first time the other day.  I also saw the Japanese trailer the same day that is just slightly longer.  Read this article where the author is convinced that the tiny extra bit tells for sure who the villain is - no name used for sure so far..and IMDB just has it as a rumor on the name too.  I don't know that I would go so far as it to say that tiny bit settles it for sure, though it does sort of seem to hint at something.

Did you see that Benedict Cumberbatch is in the movie?  He's the villain.  I wouldn't have recognized his voice if I hadn't read that just before watching the trailer for the first time.

Yeah, I've seen the Japanese one too, and know the shot they're on about. But I think that's a deliberate mis-direction. I would hope that the film-makers are a bit cleverer than to be that obvious.

I read up on that yesterday, and the offset is that it was likely a deliberate slip on an actor's part to satisfy some curiosity. The same article stated that the actor said some footage would be shown at Comic Con 2012 related to said issue. The Comic Con clip shown was of him surfing for several minutes and then 5 seconds on a green-screen set doing nothing.

Personally, I love when they can keep secrets. It irritates me for test screeners to go online that day, months before the film is going to be released to the public and say, "It was a great movie. Lots of action. The actors were great, and by the way the expected-main character everyone came to see is killed within the first 10 minutes of the movie and never spoken of again."

I think it is better when they can manage to keep things secret too..it is annoying when some people blab about stuff early on.

I did read something that said the first 9 minutes - or maybe it was 11 - of the new Star Trek will air before showings of the Hobbit in Imax.

Seemingly Paramount pretty much said no 3D, no Star Trek 2. JJ Abrams:

The studio said, ‘You have to make it in 3D if you’re going to make it, for economic reasons.’ But my feeling was I didn’t like 3D. So the idea of doing Star Trek in 3D was ridiculous. But that was very helpful in some ways, because it let us work with stereographers and the 3D crew in a way that didn’t assume we just loved 3D.

Kinda makes sense seen as though Abrams has always spoken out against 3D.

Just something more the studios can market and charge for.  I know that making films has always been a business but oh my god!

That is why I really like the idea of House of Cards.  Maybe more of this will put a scare into those "fat bastards"

I just came back from watching this one. I have to admit that after the trailer I had very low expectations. But it was great!

I thought it was a bit risky, as in the previous film they had established the parallel timeline and now they already rush back to a previous story... but all things considered, they handled it reasonably well (incl. that inquiry put forward to old Spock. And I really loved that reversed moment near the end, when the moving starts swelling up and you just know seconds ahead that he will scream "Khaaaaaaaan"; awesome.

I saw it today.  Holy crap was that good.  Too much lens flare - seems to be an ongoing thing for Abrams - but awesome movie.  Benedict Cumberbatch is absolutely wonderful.

I had read some speculation on who the villain would be.  I even remember seeing one of the first trailers from another country that showed just a little more - including the hands on the glass.  That bit did get me .... concerned that Spock would suffer the same fate...but I still went to see the movie.  Even though seeing Spock die devastated me - I was like 5 or 6 when I saw the movie the first time, and I blocked most of it out.  When Harrison revealed his real name, I think everyone in the theater for my showing reacted in some way.  Someone even clapped a few times.  Cumberbatch is freaking awesome as Khan.  Though that got me started thinking that Spock was going to die again....especially once he contacted Spock Prime to ask about Khan.  I didn't expect that Kirk would be the one to die until he was running around the core with Scotty, talking about fixing the ship.  That bit got to me again..what can I say..I'm a wimp...lol  I think the story was handled very well.  I honestly don't remember alot about Khan - I haven't gotten around to watching the older movies again yet - so I don't fully know how he was...tweaked for this movie.  I think it makes sense that Kahn would still be out there in this different time line.  He is a very strong villain and I think he worked very well in this movie.

This movie is great..I want to see it again in the theater.  Not sure if I'll be able to, but I want to.

Now I'm off to work on a review for Epinions that is spoiler free.
