Oh No!
« on: September 28, 2012, 02:28:33 PM »
I think my laptop just died! I was sitting here going through my email when all the sudden the laptop just went blank!  :o

I tried rebooting it and now it won't even power up!  :weep:

and to rub salt in the wound... there is a DVD to one of my TV show sets in it where I was planning to do some profile updates!

So this my be pretty much a goodbye for me. :( I will be able to check in once in a while on Britts computer probably... but that is probably about it. :(

I am sitting here on my daughter's computer now.

I was able to get the disc out at least. So that is a minor battle won this morning. But my hopes aren't too high of getting it fixed anytime soon. Hopefully... but we will have to see.

yeah, I know, it really messes up my review thread plans. But I will still be watching. I may just have to post notes on what I watch when I get the chance. I will have access to Britt's computer while she is in school. But other then that... not much access.

Could it be as simple as getting a new power supply? My laptop went all to buggery and on the off chance I grabbed a new power supply and plug for £6 from Amazon and fixed the problem instantly.

I can't offer any techie help because I'm not a techie though, sorry!

Pete, take the battery out. Leave it out for a few minutes and then pop it back in.

Does it really not power up, or does the monitor stay black?
If it's only the monitor that stays black, you may be lucky and it's "only" the backlight that went off to meet it's ancestors.

If it doesn't power up:
Were the batteries in when the failure occurred, or was the laptop running on PSU only?

If the batteries were in, depending on the age of your machine, you may better look for a new one. Even if "only" a capacitor blew up, the repair cost can easily outrun the remaining worth of the machine.

I'm so sorry to hear about your computer problems. I hope it's something simple and that it is a cheap and quick fix. <fingers crossed>

Pete,

On most dvd/cd drives there is a small hole in the front plate that you can push a paperclip into, to open the drive and retrieve yoru DVD when ther's no power to it.

Hope you get it fixed soon!
