Since I'm french this is some french canadian one I like.

Since we are doing a patriotic subsection, here are two German bands. Songs are still English, though.

Deine Lakaien: Resurrection Machine

Some of the ones already mentioned I also really like.
Like Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody.

It may be blasphemy to some of you, but I also like the cover of "Somebody to Love" sung by Anne Hathaway from the movie "Ella Enchanted":

Since I saw it earlier this year, I have become a big fan of the musical "Tanz der Vampire". I can recommend it to those who like Meat Loaf. The musical was written by the same guy who has written the Bats out of Hell albums: Jim Steinman.

Here is one of the songs from the musical:

There are two complete recordings available on CD. I prefer the newer one.

Another great song by Jim Steinman is Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart". As a matter of fact this one is part of the musical "Tanz der Vampire" with German lyrics.
Bonnie Tyler version:

My favorite German band is "Die Ärzte". Here one of their older songs:
"Hurra"

As you know me, I am also a fan of Bollywood movies. I could list a lot of songs from them which I really like, but I think, hardly anyone would click on those
So I restrain myself and list only two:
From the movie "Kabhi Khuchi Kabhie Gham":

From the movie "Fanaa":

I am also a fan of the band "Tegan and Sara". Although I prefer their earlier songs to the current ones:
"Come on"

Tori Amos also has some great songs:
"Winter"

A band I loved as a child and still like some of their songs is the Austrian band EAV. Songs I still really like include "Der Tod" and "Neanderthal".
"Der Tod"

"Neanderthal"

If that is Hathaway singing, then she has a nice voice, but I don't like hearing that song treated like a musical number. It's weird and lacks the real passion and aggression of the original. I must say though, I did miss a big fave of mine off my list (aside from Bo-Rhap! :P) and that's Elton John's Your Song. Except I prefer two versions he didn't do...

I didn't even appreciate Ellie Goulding before she did this for an advert last year:

Tom reminded me of the song because the other brilliant version is in Moulin Rouge of all things. Ewan MacGregor gives it something quite special and a sense of optimism. Try to ignore the silliness for the first minute and just listen how it kicks in properly:

A couple of others I'd forgot:

My favorite piece of Classical music...

Gustav Holst is one of the composers that John Williams rip-offs repeatedly to make his "original scores".

My favorite piece of music from my favorite band of all time...

The song is about the conception of a child.

Favorite Jazz piece...

Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley and Bill Evans ...just amazing!!! I love these animated videos!

You don't have to be quite so cynical. John Williams will always be recognised as one of the greatest film composers even by those of us who recognise the similarities. Stealing goes on in every art form, it's part of the progression, because how the elements are used is the sign of a great artist. It's not like he turns up and just plays bits of Holst's work edited together!

Far more blatant is James Horner. He repeats his own work endlessly and one of his core themes is lifted from Aram Khachaturian Gayane Ballet. You can hear the arrangement rattle through lots of his work in many ways, but this cannot be ignored at all:

Basically that's the start of Aliens! But Aliens is one of my absolute favourite films and it would lose so much without that mood setting piece. Ripped off? So what? It works. What disappoints me about Horner is he never seems to try and surprise anyone.

But while we're talking about classical, I'll throw in a couple more:

You can't beat Bach... ;)

And thank god for the BBC that we get this kind of thing every year!

When it comes to favorites that really stick instead of the latest pop culture songs that I'll hold at the top of a list for a few weeks, I've gonna go with the instrumental genre.

This sad song is somewhere within my top 5:

The instrument is the uilleann pipes.

I have a collection.
It can be found here.
No need to check it often.
I update it only twice a year!

I somehow had forgotten how much I liked Moulin Rouge and the different music.

I know this one is cheesey as hell, but I like it.  The song the catchy and this video is entertaining.  It really looks like an 80's video.

I'll probably be back with more later...lol

I am with Marie and Tom omn that issue. I quite enjoyed "Somebody to Love" in Ella Enchanted and almost bought it on iTunes once.

Passion, sure, but I don't find any aggression in the original though :headscratch:

I forgot one too  ;) - Nico: Janitor of Lunacy

I don't listen to classical music as much as I used to, but this one is probably my favorite discovery of the year, both film and music-wise. The clip is from Eugène Green's film Le pont des Arts, the music is Monteverdi's madrigal Lamento della ninfa. It's actually a recording by Le Poème Harmonique (here is a live version, but I like the one used in the film better).

Btw, YouTube and the GEMA suck! For almost every clip here I have to go through hoops to unblock it.
