Les Miserables (2012)
« on: October 19, 2011, 03:37:51 AM »
For those that didn't know, Tom Hoopers next directing project is a big screen adaptation of Les Miserables. Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe were already signed but today, Anne Hathaway joined the cast:

Good news IMO. I'm becoming more and more of a fan of Hathaway with every film I see her in. Very strong actress and can't wait to see her in The Dark Knight Rises, and now this to also look forward to in December 2012!

I love Les Miserables...I have 2 different soundtracks for the show.  I have seen it on stage once.  I'll definitely go see this.

I've seen a few versions of the trailer...think it is looking really good.
I just hope it comes to the theater here in town.  I shall be ticked if it doesn't.  Unfortunately, that happens at times.  Sweeney Todd only came here after Depp won the Golden Globe and the movie got some Oscar nominations.

Urgh. Me not liking musicals means I would avoid this like the plague. It's just going to be torture. But here's something funny; one very big reason you haven't seen me around much for the past couple of months (even since coming back after my last AWOL!  :-[) is that I started going out with a girl from work, and guess what? She bloody loves musicals, particularly this one! She's been waiting for this to come out for months! Before we got together, we were friends and when I said then that I wouldn't been seen dead watching a sodding musical, she said, "what, even if it was a date?" And I replied, "well of course, that would be different...". Haha, oh how we laughed!

Those words haunt me now and she's laughing her head off about it! It's worse because she's done the dutiful girlfriend thing and trusted me without complaint on several 'proper' films: Rust and Bone, On The Road and The Master, but the last two were so pretentious and dragged out, they were barely watchable and much as I liked Rust and Bone, it still didn't blow my mind. Now I'll have to see this and I just know she's going to love it.

Any recommendations for good quality ear plugs?

I haven't seen the musical, but I have the "In Concert" version on Blu-ray. Though I still haven't got around watching it. It just doesn't seem like the kind of story for me. To be honest, Jon, if it weren't for the fact that it is a musical, I think it would be very much something you would enjoy.

I really only know it from Glee. I particularly like their cover of "I Dreamed a Dream" (Video). They also did "On My Own" in the pilot episode (Video).

I have the complete original Broadway cast CD - 2 discs - and the complete 10th Anniversary Dream Cast Concert CD - 2 CDs.  I've seen the 10th anniversary concert a few times.  I just saw about half of the 20th anniversary concert last night.  It is amazing.

The story isn't happy and it makes me very emotional..but I still love it.  I am so looking forward to seeing the movie.  I think the songs work well to tell the stories.

Ear plugs hmm?  Now is that really fair?  Did she wear earplugs when watching your "proper" films?  You did say she didn't complain about it.  Seems like it is only fair that you do the same.  This is only one movie...you had her watching 3 "proper" films, and you didn't even like them that much from what you said.  You owe her.   ;)  Now put your big boy pants on and watch the movie like a good boyfriend.  ;)  Sorry....I couldn't resist.

But seriously...it is a strong story.  Give the movie a chance.  Maybe you'll like it.

"Big boy pants"! :hysterical:

Marie, there is a fault in my brain that cannot accept the fact that singing to tell a story is somehow considered reasonable. It makes no sense to me! But I will suffer it and probably will enjoy the story...

In that case Jon never try to watch Les parapluies de Cherbourg... they sing everything and with an annoying french accent

Worst, most of the actors don't sing for real as they lipsync their dialogues (wich is all the dialogue in that case)

Think of it as her paying it forward for when you eventually take her to see Django Unchained. :tease: You'll be lucky if she doesn't dump you after that. :tomato:

 Well, I'm not worried, what with Pulp Fiction being amongst her favourites and she suffered through The Master without complaint...  :P
