The 5th season of the year
« on: September 13, 2011, 03:18:50 AM »
Spring, Summer, Autumn/Fall, Winter.

I don't care. The only season I care about is the TV season and it basically starts next week.

For the station? Awesomely. They pulled in over 27mil viewers (10.3 rating). But I don't think it's gonna last.

For me? Not so much. I admit I was prejudiced against Kutcher. But that didn't make him more funny.

Evelyn was IMHO totally OOC. She and her son bantered all the time but there are enough episodes that showed they did care about another. None of that was visible during Charlie's funeral.

Jake as a character was as useless as he's been over the past few years and his schtick hasn't changed one bit - except now that he's basically an adult it's not even remotely funny anymore.

Kutcher plays a socially awkward rich guy and runs around in the full nude. That can be funny like in the Pool Billard episode of Community but here it wasn't.

The only funny character and also the only one I cared about was Alan. He got me to laugh a few times but in retrospect it's more sad that Jon Cryer will have to carry the burden by himself.

Since it was a "to be continued" episode I will watch the second half but after that I'm quite sure I call it a day.

Thanks for the details. Actually, it seems I have mostly been seeing "older" episodes, where Jake is a teenager at most. It is a very good point that his growing up pretty much puts a natural end to the show. I guess even with Sheen it probably wouldn't have lasted more than two additional seasons.

If I remember correctly Jake said in the pilot episode he was 10. That makes him abou 19 now. Still a teenager but not  funny little kid anymore either.

On another board someone said they should have introduced a lost son of Charlie's and made Alan and Jake the "men". At least story-wise that's less rediculous than to let a total stranger move in and let Alan and Jake remain.

Excited? I watched 10 of the new pilots, something I hadn't done for a couple of years, and now I remember why.

2 Broke Girls (CBS) - Broad and cliched, stale jokes. But Kat Dennings actually made at least some parts of the pilot bearable. The second episode though went beyond my pain threshold.

New Girl (Fox) - I like kooky Zooey Deschanel. Her brief stint on Weeds for example was terrific. This on the other hand is just cringeworthy.

Suburgatory (ABC) - Meh. Nothing more to say about it.

Charlie's Angels (ABC) - Offensively bad.

Ringer (CW) - Not even offensively bad, just completely dull and boring.

Revenge (ABC) - Trash, but actually quite enjoyable.

Person of Interest (CBS) - Dark Knight leftovers? Watchable.

Prime Suspect (NBC) - Maria Bello has a hat. Quite solid, but Holly Hunter she is not.

Pan Am (ABC) - Might be something to pass the time until Mad Men returns.

I tried to watch New Girl...I don't think I made it through 10 minutes.
Ringer is interesting, though I'm still not sure what is going on.  I missed the first episode.

I also like Zooey Deschanel. So I checked a clip of this series on YouTube recently. I wasn't impressed.

I totally forgot that a new series was coming out. As I give everything a chance which has girls kicking ass, I wanted to give this a try now. But I didn't even manage to watch the first ten minutes. I will pass this one.

Premise sounds interesting. I will give this a spin next.

Watched it now. Didn't really enjoy it. I think I will also pass on this one.

I usually do not watch series before I have on DVD anymore (haven't so for some years now).
But I decided to make an exception this year. I am following now "Being Erica" and "The Office". And maybe also "Community". Of course I will still buy them on DVD when the time comes.

Pan Am (ABC) - Might be something to pass the time until Mad Men returns.
One of the best French Canadian actress is in that so maybe I'll buy it when it will be release on dvd as I can't stand watching a television show on TV (publicity annoy me and I always forget to watch)

If you refer to Karine Vanasse, then she is certainly the most interesting presence among the Pan Am girls.

Homeland (Showtime) - Best new pilot, which probably doesn't say much with these candidates. I'm not too keen on terrorism plots (and this is helmed by Howard Gordon of 24) and there are a couple of other things established that can go horribly wrong. It all depends if they give Claire Danes and her character enough room to breathe. The quieter moments with her alone (returning home after a one-night-stand or watching the surveillance) were easily the best. Gratuitous cable bonus: Morena Baccarin.

Pan Am (1x03) - Despite the window dressing with historical events, the inverted Casablanca moment (Karine Vanasse, again) was quite powerful.

It's funny how the TV network here don't want to make a big deal of the fact she had a first role in an american serie. This is so weird when we know they go insane when any performer goes in France to perform and label that as incredible success even if the performer plays in 50 places theatre...

Guess the fact that she is the girlfriend of one of the network owner that isn't TVA doesn't help
