My Computer Died This Week
« on: July 02, 2011, 10:05:38 PM »
My computer was acting funny for several days and it finally died on me.  I thought of trying to get it fixed but it was pretty old so I ultimately decided to just replace it.  I was mulling over various models but wound up choosing a Dell MT.  It won't be here until the end of the month.  In the meantime my limited posting will mostly be done via my iPhone.

Congrats on the new computer... hope you don't have to wait quite that long for it. :)

Bad news: old computer dead, money to be spent. :weep:

Good news: new computer coming soon :yahoo:

I use a Dell at work and it works very well. Of course, privately I'd stick with Apple myself ;)

Don't forget to destroy completly the hard disc of your old computer before putting it on the recuperation or the garbage...

Don't know for your secret life, but all your password are on it if someone in the know pick up the disc.

Since I don't play computer games the last computer I bought was a pre-built from a computer store chain. 400€ and it does everything I need it do do (surfing, emailing, profiling, video-watching). The only addition I've made are external hard drives (coming up to 3 TB now) and a Blu-ray drive.

The only thing I'm probably exchanging sometime soon is a quieter CPU fan.

That is always a good investment

Are you sure it's the CPU fan though? Could be a case fan instead...

That's what I meant actually, misread Karsten's post :bag: I never had trouble with CPU fan noise...

The low-budget PC's usually only have very cheap CPU- and no case-fans.
I'd suspect the PSU-fan though. Because in those PC's you normally find a PSU that is running close to it's limits, this means more warmth which results in a fan running at full speed all the time.

I remember my Sony "deskbook" I used to have about 8 years ago. Even when I bought it the fan was rather loud, to the extent that on occasion it turned into an annoyance. When I later ran into trouble and the CPU started overheating every once in a while I bought a can of air and went to clean the air ducts. When I turned the machine back on I was shocked because apparently I had damaged the fan with the pressureized air, I couldn't hear it... Well, when I put my ear close I could hear it. Seems the air ducts had already been dirty when I bought the notebook :redcard: Needless to say I never bought a Sony notebook again.

I got a package from Dell yesterday but don't get too excited.  It only contained my new speakers and surge protector.  The computer itself has yet to ship.
