Hockey marathon
« on: January 31, 2008, 04:31:19 PM »
I had a mini marathon all day yesterday. I usually watch a hockey themed DVD or two around this time of year but I'm getting over bronchitis and did nothing yesterday but watch DVDs.

Overview: "With Russell Crowe ('The Insider', 'L.A. Confidential'), Hank Azaria ('Godzilla', 'The Bird Cage') and Burt Reynolds leading an incredible all-star cast, here's a fun, uplifting and action-packed story that everyone will love! A remote, hockey-obsessed town populated by 633 of the most eccentric characters you'd ever want to meet, Mystery is the kind of place where nothing ever changes. But then life as they know it gets turned ‘completely’ upside down! When a publicity stunt brings the world-famous New York Rangers -- and the national spotlight -- to Mystery for a game with the local team of weekend warriors, the whole town rises to meet the challenge of a lifetime! Also starring Mary McCormack ('True Crime', 'Deep Impact') and Lolita Davidovich ('Play It To The Bone', 'Jungle 2 Jungle') in another critical favorite from the hit-making director of 'Austin Powers' 1 & 2 -- you'll stand and cheer as this ragtag bunch shows that nothing can melt their dreams of a miracle on ice!"

I started out with  "Mystery, Alaska" a movie I had not seen before. :D (on our new scale!). I enjoyed it very much  and will certainly watch it again. The only complaint I have is that there was a little too much romance and not quite enough hockey for me.

Overview: " In February of 1980, amidst growing Cold War fears, the U.S. hockey team created an unforgettable moment of national pride when they miraculously beat the Soviets on the ice -- a win selected by Sports Illustrated as the #1 sports moment of the century.

Revisiting Lake Placid twenty-one years later, DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES? takes a look at the team's emotional climb to gold while exploring the tumultuous political and social landscape of the time.

Interviews include U.S. players Jim Craig and Mike Eruzione, coach Herb Brooks, Soviet players Vladislav Tretiak and Boris Mihailov, American hostage Barry Rosen, and broadcaster Al Michaels."

:yahoo: Of course, since this is one of my favorite memories when I was young, I just love this movie.

Overview: "From the studio that brought you ‘The Rookie’ and ‘Remember the Titans’ comes the movie everybody loves – ‘Miracle.’ Filled with exhilarating nonstop hockey action and heart-racing suspense, it's the inspiring true story behind one of the greatest moments in sports history - the 1980 United States ice hockey team's triumphant Olympic victory against the Soviet Union. Kurt Russell gives a brilliant performance as the dynamic and determined coach Herb Brooks, who had an impossible dream - beat the seemingly unbeatable Soviets at their own game. Starting with a handpicked group of twenty-six undisciplined kids, Brooks coached them to play like they never played before, and turned twenty of them into a team that believed they could achieve the unachievable - and in the process, united a nation with a new feeling of hope."

:yahoo: This movie is based on the above true story. I have probably watched it 4 or 5 times and will watch it again I'm sure. You don't have to be a sports fan to enjoy this DVD; the story is excellent and done very well.

;D I have only seen the original movie "Slap Shot" and not the second one yet. I enjoyed the first very much. Plus, since there is so much  :drooling: going on in these forums...here's one of my favorites...Paul Newman :P

My favourite movie about our national sport, it's a classic here the french canadian dubbing is so great. In fact even if I can I've never listen the original english track. Don't listen the second one, it's one of the worst movie I've never seen (didn't pay for it and didn't want it, but no real choice it come with the first one).

Another good hockey theme films, if you don't have it, is "Youngblood"
