Star Wars
« on: July 27, 2010, 02:50:12 PM »
As you all know... I will be getting this set soon...

Which of course contains...

As well as a bonus disc...

Right now I have the first 2 of the 3 prequel movies. So I am planning on ordering the 3rd prequel soon (Can't believe it is still $15 at amazon!)... this way I can have a Star Wars marathon one weekend hopefully before too long.

Now... I haven't watched these original movies in many years. So story-wise... I remember next to nothing. Obviously Lucas intends for the prequels to be watched first...  and then the original three movies... I would guess anyway.

But what do you all say... what would give the most enjoyment out of such a marathon? Going by episode number or going by production year?

Obviously we have better effects then we did back then... would it be a bit of a shock to the system watching the prequels first and then see a (perhaps noticeable) decline in the quality of the effects... taking away from the enjoyment a bit?

Or am I just making too much out of this all... and it is just a personal preference type thing? :P And if it is a personal preference type thing... what is yours?
Pete

My advice (and I mean that absolutely seriously): Watch 4, 5 and 6 and be done with it.

And if you absolutely must watch 1, 2 and 3 then do it after 6. You'll notice the drop in quality immediately.

No! No no no no no no no... and no! Originals first, Pete, if for no other reason that Lucas turned into a hack and the prequels are awful. The effects are 'better' technically but they have no soul.

Start with the best.

Production year like that is where I was leaning... but then in the back of my mind I kept thinking but is that the intended viewing order? :P

Absolutely - I agree! I love part IV - VI but I don't really need 1-3!

The prequels aren't necessary for anything. 4 works as a stand-alone movie and 4-6 work perfectly as a trilogy.

The problem with 1-3 is that Lucas filled the cup up to the brim with CGI and totally forgot to pour some heart in it. And he replaced the "magic" with technobabble (Midichlorians anyone?).

Oh my...I've become quite contentious lately. Of course I love the original trilogy best but I like to do/read/watch things in order.

So, I would (and have on re-screenings) watched the films in chronological order.

Chronological order is 1977, 1980, 1983, 1999, 2002, 2005.  :tease:

Now I do reserve the right to change my mind... but think for this first time I will watch it...

4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3

But I may at some point do...

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

Just to see how it would feel together that way.

Personally I'd do 4, 5, 6, 2, 3 and leave off 1. But that's just me. I find 1 too long and nothing happens in it, but I do like the Darth Maul vs Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan fight. 2 is fun, it's all out war and all. and 3 while a but cheesy, still is the "birth" of Darth Vader and I love it even if just for that.

4-5-6 don't need any introduction. Even though I'd sometimes leave off 6...

What's my order of preference?
To me it's 5, 4, 3, 6, 2, 1

Building on what Jon said, yes, George Lucas has become such a hack that he probably would suggest to watch 1-6 ::)

Obviously it's 4-6 and then 1-3 (if you so must). I own all of them on DVD but only three of them will be upgraded to Blu-ray when the time comes.

If you ever get to show them to someone for the first time, DO NOT show them chronologically, it will ruin all the plot twists! (which is where we come back to the first sentence of this post).

I've changed my mind, it is a woman's prerogative after all. When I read a book, I like to read the author's earliest works first. And, since the original trilogy was written first, I would watch them first. Besides, the DVDs will arrive Thursday and you won't be able to resist!

 There is several in that package I don't think I will be able to resist!

This thread has done one thing... it has me questioning whether or not I should even bother buying Episode 3. Though it does seem a little odd to own episodes 1,2,4,5 & 6! :P
