It's been many a year since I read any of the books, but I remember the Hobbit being aimed at younger readers and being a lot more action-orientated than the LOTR books, which went at a much more leisurely pace, and so conversely maybe the one book has a lot less to cut out than the 3 books.
I just hope we don't end up with films as dragged out as King Kong was.
Hmmm, that makes sense. And agreed with the King Kong reference. It was questionable to me that he needed over three hours to re-tell a 100min movie :headscratch:

Worrying. There's little wrong with LoTR but for a core problem in Jackson being too close to the work. He couldn't step back and be self-critical, so they could easily bloat in an effort to include everything, and of course, he couldn't bear to end them, so Return has 6 or so endings! Turning what was Tolkein's leanest book into three films sounds like he can't even detach himself from the script to find his scissors.

I think this was the issue with Kong as well, as you say.

It took a little while to tie up Return of the King book too.

I always found the multiple endings of RotK less troublesome when I did the marathon watching all three films back to back.

Having 30 minutes of endings after a 3 hour film is challenging, but after nearly 12 hours it feels much different.

There were a lot of characters in those movies...and several things to tie up.  I think it works..I always have.
