 I almost had ignored this as yet another stupid teen comedy, but it is really rather delightful fun and Emma Stone, who I didn't know previously, is one hell of a comedic actress with a voice to die for.
I saw this on the airplane not too long ago and agree on all accounts.

Thanks for this. Like Matthias when I saw this listed with its associated review suggesting a stupid teen comedy I ignored it,  but then I read a review elsewhere and looked a bit deeper into it and decided to go for it.

Today these arrived

Richard Strauss: Elektra

Richard Wagner: Die Walküre

So I want to ask our German friends (or anyone else that has seen it) how is Winter Sleepers? is it worth the trouble of having to read the movie? I am such a slow reader that it takes plenty of pausing and rewinding to catch it all!  :bag:  :P

Never heard of it. The only movie I have seen by Tom Tykwer is "Lola rennt/Run Lola Run".

When you go through those 3/$3 packages make sure you go through them all. Many times they package them with different movies. My 3 pack had Lassie and Ten Commandments but the third one, I don't remember what it was, but it was different.

Make sure you check the top of the package too because some of the Lassie DVDs were full screen and others widescreen.

Thanks Kathy... I did go through them all... this one was the only one the local store had with Lassie. And yes I got the widescreen :)

While I have seen it, I sadly don't remember much beyond the summary you already cited. It certainly had some dazzling cinematography, but while playing on similar tropes as his subsequent films, it was a bit more angsty and "German" than those. Also, there was a problem with the US DVD (full screen or letterboxed?). Sorry, not much help, I know.

that's ok :)

I just looked at the back of the box... it says...

4X3 Letter box  Presented in A "Matted" Widescreen Format Preserving the Aspect Ratio of its Original Theatrical Exhibition.

I admit I don't know too much about the aspect ratios... but that sounds a bit weird to me for some reason.  :-\

Love that show! Especially the "Bring Me To Life" number! And then closes the show with my favourite song of hers, Nella Fantasia ... awesome stuff!

Woot! Did it right this time!

the first part seems a fancy way to say non-anamorphic. The rest is o.k. Movies are often filmed on 4:3 film stock and then latter a matte is applied (possibly as late as in the cinema) to create the widescreen effect.

I think there was a Pioneer release of Bride of Re-Animator which actually showcased this. They presented the open matte film in 4:3 and by choosing an option in the menu they would apply the matte and you could see the theatrical 1.85:1 version.

Many films in the seventies were filmed this way, but I prefer to recreate it by using my reader to do the cropping than having it force on the dvd. The Chearleaders is a good exemple of a label scrapping a movie because of a forced cropping...
