The Family Stone
An incredible all-star cast shines in this deliriously funny comedy that "balances heart and humor" (Houston Chronicle) with a "sharp comic edge" (Rolling Stone)! Featuring Sarah Jessica Parker in a Golden Globe® -nominated* role, The Family Stone is "engaging, enticing [and] first-rate" (Los Angeles Times)!

Corporate executive Meredith Morton (Sarah Jessica Parker) is as uptight and ultra-conservative as her pin-striped designer suit. Her boyfriend Everett Stone's (Dermot Mulroney) family is as relaxed and quirky as their aging New England Colonial. So when Meredith ventures out of Manhattan to meet Everett's clan, it's no wonder her arrival is met with all the enthusiasm of a nasty Nor'easter. But one surprise guest, two shocking romances and several beers later, Meredith's icy exterior begins to thaw...and she may just melt the hearts of the Family Stone!

*2005: Actress in a Musical or Comedy
Alien Nation / Enemy Mine
'ALIEN NATION'
Thought-provoking, witty and entertaining, this action-packed blend of science fiction and police drama finds Los Angeles the new home of 300,000 humanoid extraterrestrials. When a gang of these Newcomers kills a police detective's (James Caan) partner, he sets out to solve the crime with his new partner (Many Patinkin) -- the L.A.P.D.'s first Newcomer detective. But the unlikely pair soon uncover a far more dangerous threat to society.

'ENEMY MINE'
In this visually stunning sci-fi adventure, two warriors engaged in a savage, futuristic war between Earth and the planet Dracon, crash-land on a desolate, fiery planet. At first, the human (Dennis Quaid) and his reptilian, alien opponent (Louis Gossett, Jr.) are intent on destroying each other. But after battling the elements and each other, the two stranded pilots gradually realize that the only way either of them will survive is to overcome their undying hatred.
The Return
Sarah Michelle Gellar (The Grudge) stars in this shocking, non-stop supernatural thriller unlike anything you've ever experienced before. Joanna Mills (Gellar) is haunted by increasingly terrifying visions where she can see and feel the brutal murder of a woman she's never met. With her life spiraling out-of-control, she follows the relentless nightmares to an eerie small town in Texas – a place where secrets can't be buried, a spirit seeks vengeance, and the horrific murder from Joanna's visions may just be her own.
The Holiday
In Nancy Meyers' The Holiday, a romantic comedy from the director of Something's Gotta Give and What Women Want, two women trade homes only to find that a change of address can change their lives.

Iris (Winslet) is in love with a man who is about to marry another woman. Across the globe, Amanda (Diaz), realizes the man she lives with has been unfaithful. Two women who have never met and live 6000 miles apart, find themselves in the exact same place. They meet online at a home exchange website and impulsively switch homes for the holiday. Iris moves into Amanda's L.A. house in sunny California as Amanda arrives in the snow covered English countryside. Shortly after arriving at their destinations, both women find the last thing either wants or expects: a new romance. Amanda is charmed by Iris' handsome brother Graham (Law) and Iris, with inspiration provided by legendary screenwriter Arthur (Wallach), mends her heart when she meets film composer Miles (Black).

Danae Cassandra .. some great old ones and though I have a bunch myself I find it hard to watch them some times.  I really have to be in a 'mood' to watch and enjoy them.  What about you?

I really like the two 'on hold at the shop'.  I saw A Boy and His Dog back in 1974 when it first came out.  I had read the story for the first time when The Beast that Shouted Love at the Heart of the World by Harlan Ellison first came out.  I love the book .. but especially this story.  Although the film is a bit different it is a great film .. one of the first apocalyptic films as far as I am concerned.  If you haven't seen it I hope you really enjoy it .. especially the ending

I love old movies.  I know I'm basically in the minority.  I rarely find them hard to watch.  If anything, I really have to be in the 'mood' to enjoy a modern Hollywood film.  I actually prefer old romance and old comedy to modern.  There's a classiness (for lack of a better term) to them that you don't see any more.

I've read about A Boy and His Dog and was very pleased to see it come in to the shop, where I can get it for trade.  I don't know when I'll get around to watching it, but I think it should be interesting.

Nah .. not the minority .. at least there are two of us <G>.  Although I do need to be in a mood for the very earlly films (silent-early 30's) .. almost anything from early 30's-late 50's is an easy watch.   Of course I grew up on that stuff so probably the good influence of my parents.  I love early jazz, swing and bebop too <G>

There is something about the substance of earlier films that most current films just don't have.
Thank you
