Pete, regarding the western set you just got, I must confess I've only seen a few of them, the two John Wayne movies which were from his "B" western days...those are cheaply made westerns (usually shot in about a week) and with a short running time, about an hour each.  They're not a bad way to spend an hour or two if you can get in a nostalgiac mood...grab your cowboy hat and a cap pistol and have at it!  I looked up the others in "Western Movies", a Leonard Maltin-like review book except that only westerns are covered.  Here are some short comments on the other films...

Powder Keg--"Pretty fair action drama which resulted in the brief TV series 'The Bearcats'".
boot Hill--"Rather complicated and somewhat hard-to-follow spaghetti western."
To The Last Man--"Excellently told, highly recommended."  Directed by Henry Hathaway who would go on to direct True Grit a mere 38 years later.
Song of Arizona--"Fairly lively actioner in the Roy Rogers series."
Rage At Dawn--"Pretty good Randolph Scott vehicle with a good script, direction and cast."
This Man Can't Die--"Pretty good spaghetti westerner which should please Guy Madison fans."
Cry Blood Apache--"Pretty anemic actioner enhanced only by Joel McCrea's brief cameo." (Though you list Joel McCrea for this movie, the real star is Joel's son Jody McCrea.)
The Hellbenders--"Highly actionful but statical Italian oater with a fine performance by Joseph Cotten."
It Can Be Done Amigo--"Amusing, rambling Spanish-made oater with little bloodshed."
Chino--"Entertaining and colorful Charles Bronson vehicle made in Spain."
Kid Vengeance--"Overly violent oater filmed in Israel." (Wow, remember when westerns used to be made in the U.S.?)
My Outlaw Brother--"More than passable actioner."
Desperate Mission--"Ricardo Montalban good in the title role, but overall a mediocre film."
The Hanged Man--"Better-than-average oater made for television."
Between God, The Devil and a Winchester--This movie isn't listed in the two books I looked in...which means it either didn't play in this country or did under a different title or (most likely) is such a minor western they chose not to include it in either book.
The Grand Duel--"Another typically violent Western from Europe..."
The Sundowners--"Pretty well done action melodrama" (and I think it was done in America, woo-hoo!)
White Comanche--"Made in Italy, this is one of the better 1960s European westerns, enhanced by good work by Joseph Cotten and William Shatner, the latter in a dual role."

As I have said, I have only seen the pair of John Wayne movies but I also have White Comanche (which I have put off watching because my copy doesn't have particularly good video quality) and the two Randolph Scott westerns.  I should watch the Scott movies soon since they got good notices here.  But next time, buy some American westerns!  :tease:

I am getting there in my Western collection now though... I now have 41 westerns in my collection!  ;D

Well, we may have to start a lawsuit for them calling these "great" westerns  :P  As I suggested, the Randolph Scott movies may be the best though they are from an earlier era.  You can use the comments on the others to possibly help you pick which to watch first.  I'm not sure if that Roy Rogers film is a singing cowboy film or not...he did that but I think moved away from that and into more regular action films later.  His film in this set does have Dale Evans in it...as well as everybody's favorite western sidekick, Gabby Hayes.

Pete, don't watch that boxset and let it put you off! Don't burn out on the wrong horse operas without getting to things like The Searchers or even Silverado. As Roger noticed, that set you have has a lot of European ones which are likely low budget reactions to the success of A Fistful of Dollars. That, is essential viewing!

Thing is, Hollywood was built by cowboys and gangsters so you'll always be able to find hundreds of cheapies that were getting churned out in the early years like a factory line.

As I recall, I believe Pete does indeed have a copy of Silverado.  Yes, there are good and bad westerns, just as with any genre.  That reminds me, it's time for me to put up my latest review...

Don't worry... a bad movie (or even several bad movies) wouldn't put me off a genre. I know there is many good and many bad movies for any genre... including my all-time favorite genre... horror!

I do indeed have (and enjoyed) Silverado. I still will need to get a copy of The Searchers though.

Here's what I've gotten in the last couple of weeks.

I got Dreamgirls, Summer School, and L.A. Confidential at Walmart today.  Dreamgirls was $3, Summer School was $5, and L.A. Confidential was $7.50...and that's for the newer 2 disc version.

I've got You've Got Mail but mine has a much different cover...of course, I believe I have the first DVD release of that.

Yahoo!!!  Today was the first time I came to the site, checked out the 3 Random Reviews I always get on the home page and saw one of my own reviews there!   ;D  For the record it was my review of the John Wayne quickie western "Ride Him Cowboy"...

I haven't come across the cheap westerns set Pete just got but I probably wouldn't buy it anyway.  It's not because I don't like the choice of westerns in it (though it's part of it) but the fact that cheap DVD sets usually also mean cheap production values.  We have a nice technological advance here and they're giving us product that looks every bit as bad as old VHS tapes used to.  I won't waste my money on them.  In the U.S., we used to have a magazine called Total Movie and they gave away a set of movies with a magazine subscription.  For a magazine devoted to the world of DVDs, I was shocked at how shoddy the DVD movies looked, so I ultimately through mine out.  And then the magazine folded.

:hysterical: Nothing against the film Marie, even if this is definitively not my genre, but...

Deluxe Edition for Sleepless in Seatle takes two ::)

I think at all the great movies not release yet that a lot of people want, but what they have choose to release? Another edition of a predictable romantic comedy (at least more than usual)

What next? From Justin to Kelly Ultimate Edition :hmmmm:

Oh I know.  But it was only $4. I have trouble resisting cheap DVDs. :)

Parker Lewis Can't Lose: Season One ($31.36 at DVD Pacific)
I very much enjoyed this series, when it was first aired in Germany.
M.A.S.K.: Ultimate Collection ($82.2 (AUD) at ezyDVD)
This is a series I very much wanted to see in the late 80s. But it was only on at 5 in the morning or so. But I had three episodes on three commercial VHS tapes I had watched countless times.
The Batman/Superman Movie (£4.73 at Amazon.co.uk)
Movie cut together from three animated Superman episodes ("World's Finest 1-3"). Here Lois starts dating Bruce Wayne until she finds out that he is Batman (as far as I remember).

Today I received El Dorado: Centennial Edition which is a 2-disc set.  Now I can do what I've been planning and review it and Rio Bravo together.  A guy on a western e-mail list I'm on also sent me an old John Wayne movie, Conflict, where Duke plays a boxer and that arrived today also.  The quality on it isn't very good so I'll probably just watch it once and then toss it out.  I won't tell him that, though...no need to hurt his feelings.
