Topic: Drew Barrymore Movies

Surprisingly enough, I have very few Drew Barrymore movies in my collection.  I have E.T., of course, but she's only a kid in that.  I also have Batman Forever...but she only has a bit part in that.  I think the only movie of hers I have where she's the lead and an adult is her first Charlie's Angels movie.

Which version do you prefer? The more clarified Director's Cut (some say simplified , haven't seen it yet), or the more confusing Theatrical Cut (which I found indeed not entirely clear, but some say that's half the fun)?

I prefer the original cut. It's much finer in the writing and treats the viewer with intelligence. The DC is dumber and basically spells things out for thickos.

This particular thicko was very glad to see the DC as it helped him understand the proper version and allows him to look clever.

There are certain things that should be revealed in a particular way. For instance, you should have said:

"Hello everyone. My name is Roger... and I own the Charlie's Angel DVD. Please don't judge me!"

Then we all clap and reassure you as you have a public breakdown. Obviously admitting to owning the sequel is liable to simply get you shot.

I liked the first one for its campy fun and think the sequel is utter shit.

Hmm, well... Personally I prefer the DC, I know people always say its simplified but to be honest... how can you simplify a film where even the director is a little confused by it? 

;P Alot of people think im weird for saying this but.... If I could write a story like Donnie Darko that was made in to a film that is so confusing and seen as confusing by so many people... id die a happy person :p

I still haven't seen the director's cut. I try to avoid double-dipping. I bought the US DVD before the movie was even in German theatres. Sometimes I feel cheated buying a movie when it is first released, when they release a longer cut and/or director's cut later on. To be fair, the director's cut wasn't planned when the DVD was first released (I assume).

Well, Tom, like I say, in this case I think the two compliment each other.

Emma, some of the best stories confuse their own creators! Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke couldn't really unlock 2001. For me that reveals something raw and commendable. In the case of Donnie Darko, I don't like the some of the more explicit explanations because it reduces the interpretations you can have in the story, like religion.

Tom, even if you don't like double dipping, you can pick the DC up for less then £2, so I think its worth it!

Jon, I agree... and the last two scripts i have written for my script writting class (one 40 pages the other just over 90) have had two tutors in a heated debate over what happened... It was funny to watch... when they asked me I simply said " you decide... I wrote it for the reader not for myself, my opinion on the story is unimportant" if those ever get made into films  id be so happy.

I think any film that left as open as DD is can be interpreted in some strange strange way!


Infact! I think we should stat a discussion thread about Donnie Darko! its a film that I actually really enjoy reading other people views on.

Have you ever heard the story about Alfred Hitchcock's granddaughter and To Catch A Thief? I think it was his granddaughter anyway. She was asked in school to write an essay on To Catch A Thief. Obviously, she went to see Gramps and he gave her a few pointers. Despite help from the director of the film, she got a disappointing "C"! The teacher then explained her mistakes.

Dejected, she went back to Hitch. He just shrugged his shoulders and said, "Well, that's what I thought it meant..."

  That just sums up what a genius he was and how well he understood film, that he didn't feel he should be precious about his own work.

Double dipping for DVDs was arther rare for me, but I have little more leeway for Blu-ray. So I jumped at the chance to upgrade my DVD to Blu-ray, which contains both versions.

I only saw the DC of DD and still was mightily confused about what was going on in that movie....
