Topic: The Karate Kid

As I said in the other thread... I have The Karate Kid Collection ordered (and already shipped!)... Today I told Britt that I ordered it... and she said she wants to go see the new Karate Kid Movie! I didn't even know they were making one! Turns out that Jackie Chan is playing Mr. Han... the "Mr. Miyagi" character.

Here is a look at the new Karate Kid movie...



It comes out June 11th.

So while I said I won't promise... I told her most likely we will go see Iron Man 2 in May... and Karate Kid in June. This year I will be seeing more movies in the Theater then I have in YEARS!

haha... I am slightly worried about this...

Jaden Smith was ok in "The Pursuit of Happiness" and I like Jackie Chan... hes definitely suited to the role... maybe it will be good.

The trailer looks ok. Nice gag from Chan with a play on Mr. Miyagi's original catching fly with chopsticks...  

But the film is off to a bad start straight-away. Why are they still calling it Karate Kid? Chan is Chinese and they're are multiple references to Kung-Fu in the trailer, so it doesn't make sense.

Or perhaps the plot has changed. Perhaps Jaden encounters bullies and gets taught Karate by a kindly old Japanese guy, goes back to school and still gets beaten up, so Jackie Chan finds him and says, "stop trying to use Karate rubbish. I teach you proper way to kick ass!". And so he teaches The Karate Kid, Kung-Fu...

I know what you mean... I have some of the same concerns. But at the same time it still looks like fun.

And I also had to laugh at that fly gag Jackie Chan did.

While I do have these concerns... I am still looking forward to seeing it.

But hey... The Kung-Fu Kid sounds pretty good too!

I think the movie will come out ok. I've never seen the first movies, but am looking forward to seeing them with my dad.

I know. I think Kung Fu practitioners may get wound up by this, what with Karate being relatively new and from a different sodding country. But, it looks like I might have been right! Sort of...

I just found this plot synopsis:

In Columbia Pictures' The Karate Kid, 12-year-old Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) could've been the most popular kid in Detroit, but his mother's (Taraji P. Henson) latest career move has landed him in China. Dre immediately falls for his classmate Mei Ying--and the feeling is mutual--but cultural differences make such a friendship impossible. Even worse, Dre's feelings make an enemy of the class bully, Cheng. In the land of kung fu, Dre knows only a little karate, and Cheng puts "the karate kid" on the floor with ease. With no friends in a strange land, Dre has nowhere to turn but maintenance man Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), who is secretly a master of kung fu. As Han teaches Dre that kung fu is not about punches and parries, but maturity and calm, Dre realizes that facing down the bullies will be the fight of his life.

It's still marketing spin to be able to use the old title, but if this is the case, at least they're referencing it in the plot.
