This seems to be a copy of the list: http://community.livejournal.com/ohnotheydidnt/43508317.html

Thanks for that. I got tired clicking through the pages after the 3rd one. Surprisingly (or not), I do have 5 of them:
45. Blade Trinity
44. The Matrix Revolutions
41. Van Helsing
33. Ultraviolet
29. Southland Tales

I've never seen Heaven's Gate, Antares, but your comments ring true with a lot that I've heard over the years. I think like Cleopatra, it was flop in the days when Hollywood wasn't used to such huge failures, so its reputation has unfairly endured. But holding with my above criteria, and considering it was before the days of commercial blockbuster crap, I doubt I would find it "offensive". Perhaps just disappointed it didn't quite gel. It goes without saying that number 50, Spider-Man 3, is bound to be a worse film than anything Cimino ever even thought of making. There's nothing cynical about trying.

Certainly on the original link, Empire had a "Redeeming Feature" for each entry (Batman and Robin's was Silverstone's backside!). For Heaven's Gate, they mention how the longer cut is much better.

The saddest part of the Heaven's Gate debacle was that it forever changed Hollywood. The Auteur's were out, and the blockbuster Wunderkinds were in. Movie making has never been the same. To me, the late 60's through the mid-70's were the most fruitful time in film history. In one-felled swoop, it was over.

I absolutely agree. I love Star Wars and Jaws, but they ushered in a new style of going round in circles.

Exactly the kind of non credible list I expected to see ::)
Why not call it
"The 50 not so good mainstream films that you have seen in the last 10 years even if you followed the herd in the theatre to watch them"

76% of them were made between 2009-1999
Just one is pre-1980 and it's Plan 9 ::) (who is far from being one of the worst movie ever made)

House of the dead isn't a bad movie since it's the best zombie movie made in the last 10 years,
Alone in the dark isn't that bad the only problem are the bad cgi and Tara Reid,
Showgirls isn't a bad movie at all, badly executed but not bad,
Scary movie is a fun movie for what it is,
Heaven's Gate is bad because it was butchered by the studio,

But I'm happy to know that for the mainstream audience no bad movies were made from 1892 till 1980 (except from the obvious Plan 9 in 59).

Another magazine to add to my list of "The 50 most stupid magazine about the mainstream industry to never purchase"

What's the word? pathetic is it ::)

 ???

The list was compiled by Internet votes and with any such list it is ultimately pointless. People can't think past the last few years and deal with knee-jerk reactions. It's only real purpose is to get people talking, which it has done. It's hardly a reflection of the magazine proper, now is it?

I've not missed an issue of Empire since 1994. They do a top 100, even 500, every couple of years and it always gets the same arguments and is meaningless pap, but to dismiss the whole publication is absurd! It's a great magazine. While they skew mainstream because that's what sells, they champion new talent and have great articles on the history of film. Only this month, they've got an in-depth piece on Orson Welles and the rumours of his involvement in a murder plot. Have you heard of Kim Newman? He does a column every single month championing the very films you sometimes review.

But of course, you've already made your mind up based on a daft Internet only list they asked the public to make.

Was I that tough on them Jon...

The magazine is maybe good (I think that you had already pointed some good article from them), but seriously this is the kind of stuff that Entertainment Tonight, Maxim or Fangoria do and all of them had zero credibility. A serious magazine don't ask the imdb crowd to vote on something like that... They ask the question to 10 or 15 movie critics from a large taste spectrum or they check the rating given by the critics trough the time.

What can I say Jon? The list is pathetic in its wording title and the film included. What was previsible since the imdb crowd had choosen, but where are the Inchon, Bela Lugosi Meets a Brooklyn Gorilla, Snuff or Teenage Zombies of this world? Now that's bad movie making, not overated recent films... Common I'm sure Transformer 2 sucks but one of the worst movie ever made ::) it's a film about robots that fight other robots, not greatest movie of all time materials but I'm sure it's entertainning to watch and this is what a movie is for...

Don't take my comment that hard ;)

I have to disagree with Heaven's Gate being #6. I don't know how many of you were old enough to remember when it was being made, but the media savaged it before it was even released. It became a cause célèbre at the time, even though no one had seen any of the actual footage shot. They focused on the extravagances of the shoot by Cimino, because it was like shooting fish in a barrel. Cimino had gone a little crazy in his pursuit of cinema as Art.

I saw it in its original theatrical run, and I was blown away by the cinematography. One thing you can't say about Cimino is this, his film's look awful. Yes, the story seemed disjointed, but years later we found out that United Artists, in desperation, forced him to cut the film down tremendously. A few years ago, I got to see the extended version on TCM, and it proved that Cimino's original concept was actually good.

I've never seen Heaven's Gate, Antares, but your comments ring true with a lot that I've heard over the years. I think like Cleopatra, it was flop in the days when Hollywood wasn't used to such huge failures, so its reputation has unfairly endured. Reading this has made me wonder that a certain Mr Cameron has been quite so fortunate with his last 2 films, when you look at how much they cost to produce.
Titanic - $200,000,000
Avatar - $300,000,000 (although some reports have the figure closing in on $500,000,000 HALF A BILLION freaking dollars)

Yes each one has done reasonably well, and in the case of Avatar is an amazing film, I can't speak of Titanic as I have never seen it and have no intention of ever doing so.

I have to admit I often read both Empire and Total Film, I like there reviews, features (not the top whatever) and a few other things they have, there not the worse film magazines Ive read... I bought "Little White Lies" a few months ago.... it said "Wes Andersons first movie Rushmore" obviously they hadn't done research because it was of course Bottle Rocket :/... if you want to put a magazine on your list Jimmy, put Little White Lies. :p

Anyone feel up to typing up the complete list?  I hate it when a site does a list like this and each entry gets its own page...I'm not going to click on 50 different pages.  I only saw #50 and then went directly to #1 which I do have...  ::)

Thanks, Pete, I must've missed that one.  Some of those definitely belong on such a list but I'm less certain of others.  I saw Raise The Titanic once via pre-recorded tape and I don't recall it being bad at all but then it's been over 25 years (probably) since I saw it.  I only own about 3 of these movies...Superman IV, Plan 9 From Outer Space (which I probably bought because it's bad, not in spite of it being bad) and the aforementioned Batman & Robin.  There's one or two others I may have but I forget.  So I won't mention those titles since I'm not sure.

Hmmm, no westerns on this list...not even "The Terror of Tiny Town"  :P

I have the following from this list:

50. Spiderman 3
45. Blade Trinity
44. The Matrix Revolutions
40. Superman IV: the Quest for Peace
30. Scary Movie
24. Speed 2
16. Plan 9 from outer space
9. Highlander 2: the Quickening
1. Batman and Robin

It has been awhile that I watched it, but was Scary Movie really a bad movie? At the time I thought it was quite good. Only all the parody movies which followed were mostly bad.
Otherwise these movies on this partial list were mainly very disappointing sequels. Not the 50 worst movies.

Oops, I forgot about Heaven's Gate...brain fart, I guess.  I've never seen it...so I'm not sure if it's considered a traditioinal western (meaning being in the right time period and all).
