Maybe your DVD was more obvious, but the difference in quality is staggering overall.
You make it sound like seeing matte lines is a good thing :stars:

It would be the only thing where I can agree with tinkering with old films, removing such kind artefacts from filmmaking that they couldn't eliminate back in the day. I think they had done such things with King Kong when it was released on DVD few years back (SO looking forward to the Blu in September).

Thank you, that was exactly what I was thinking. It seems that blu-ray (and DVD to some extent) has come to the level of quality that they reveal artifacts that wouldn't have been visible in the cinemas. I was wondering if something had indeed been done with this sequence to make the matte lines less noticeable.

(And I agree about looking forward to Kong on blu! It's my absolute favorite movie)

It is the most obvious with CGI. CGI by nature looks always very sharp and crisp, whereas film will give you a certain level of softness. Blu-ray will only enhance this, making CGI even more obvious, while DVD will add a little softness to the CGI, having it blend in with the rest of the film better. ....if that makes any sense to you.

Ok, does anyone have a remedy for burnt eyeballs?

I put the Blu-Ray on for The Searchers. Only for a moment and it was long enough to wet myself at the sight of Monument Valley in hi-def, but so far as vision concerned, still ok.

I was srecently going through this thread and I knew I was eventually going to get The Searchers but after reading this comment from Jon, I knew I had to get it right away.  I just ordered it and The Searchers will be my first Blu-ray movie purchase and second Blu-ray purchase overall.  I had previously ordered the mini-series Lonesome Dove.  I actually had received an e-mail from Amazon with a $10 promotional code (a thank you for ordering $30 in magazine subscriptions recently) and that paid for the cost of this movie...so I only have to pay the shipping for it.  Now I've gotta see about getting that HD television by the time this movie arrives...

I just read that North By Northwest - 50th Anniversary Edition (Blu-ray) is being released in Australia soon.
From what I've heard about the movie and the comments on the blu-ray quality that I've read here , I'll pick this one up for sure.

North by Northwest is gorgeous on Blu-ray.

There's nothing gorgeous about The Sound of Music.  :hysterical:

Just kidding, I've never seen it but I imagine it would look stunning in hi-def.

You've never seen The Sound of Music? You should check it out, it was one of my favourite films as a kid. I think when I was 10 years old I used to watch it almost everyday, our VHS of it basically stopped working by the end.

I don't think so, that stuff isn't for me. Plus I can't stand Julie Andrews. :suicide:

I'm planning on getting Dances With Wolves as a new edition is coming out next week.  Surprisingly, I have never bought that on DVD...I do have an old laserdisc copy, though.  I may also get the Sharon Stone western The Quick and the Dead though I haven't totally decided yet.  I also see that Pleasantville is coming out on Blu-ray in about a month but I may wait a bit on that.

"That stuff"?  :hmmmm:

Which stuff would that be? Do you not like films about Nazi's, films set in Austria, films involving Nuns... or are you just not a musical person?

Relax Sophie, I'm not a musical person that's all.

Hey I'm totally relaxed! I don't even know how you got the impression that I wasn't. Heaps of people don't like the film and that's totally fine, but when you said you aren't into "that stuff" I found it to be a very broad statement and was just curious as to which aspect of it in particular you aren't interested in. That's all, no hard feelings intended. Merely curiosity, I thought it may have been the musical aspect but I just wasn't sure.

I'm glad I'm not a fan of the movie, one could go bankrupt trying to collect all the editions that have been released.
