Romantic Comedy
« on: January 01, 2010, 02:09:04 PM »
I noticed on the calendar today that Valentines Day lands on a Sunday. So I think that is a perfect excuse to do Romantic Comedies for that weekend's Marathon.

Here is what Romantic Comedies I have to choose from...

- 13 Going on 30
- 50 First Dates
- AquaMarine (Brittany's)
- Blast from the Past
- Chasing Amy
- Fools Rush In
- Heart and Souls
- His Girl Friday
- How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
- I'm with Lucy
- Made in Manhattan
- Meet John Doe
- The Princess Diaries
- Runaway Bride
- See Jane Date
- Serving Sara
- Swept Away
- Two Weeks Notice
- What a Woman Wants
- While You Were Sleeping

These I am not quite sure if they fit in the Romantic Comedy line.. What do you think?...

- 28 Days
- Bewitched
- Bruce Almighty (I never think Romance with this one.. but listed with it in profiler??)
- Can't Hardly Wait (been years since I seen this one)
- EdTV (been years... really don't remember)
- Full Frontal (never seen it but is listed that way in profiler???)
- The Majestic (never seen it but is listed that way in profiler???)
- Miss Congeniality (Seems more straight Comedy... but definitely some romance in it)
- The Pajama Game (never seen it but is listed that way in profiler???)
- The Sweetest Thing  (never seen it but is listed that way in profiler???)

So...

1. What do you think? Any in the second list fit?
2. Anyone else up to some Romantic Comedies on the Valentine's Day weekend?

Pete, why not look out for some proper romantic comedies? There's some good movies in that list, but nothing great. Get The Philadelphia Story or The Apartment or Adam's Rib or anything by Preston Sturges, like Sullivan's Travels. Do it properly, man!  :yellowcard:

From your second list, by the way, things like Bruce Almighty are sometimes counted as romantic because that's the underlying arc. Like most of Hitchcock's earlier films at least, although they were thrillers, the romance was the reason for the plot by the end.

Jon... Take pity on me man! Remember... I am the one that is new to pretty much anything pre-1980!  :P So I can only go by what people suggest to me for those (that and them being cheap enough for me to purchase). But will keep those in mind for next purchase! Still have over a month before Valentine's day!

Humour-wise The Sweetest Thing is in the same league as American Pie. So, decide for yourself.

Miss Congeniality?  Haven't you already reviewed that about 77 times?  :surrender:

Speaking of Saundra Bullock, I saw one of her movies in the $5 bin at Wal-Mart today, though I didn't buy it...and if there's one of her movies you likely haven't seen it's probably this one.  It's "The Thing Called Love" which, if I recall correctly, is about young country singers.  So, have you seen that one?  And if so, what did you think?

I hadn't heard about this one. I have put it on my wishlist and will order it the next time I am ordering from amazon.co.uk (it's cheap, so not a problem for a blind buy). Thanks :)

- Bewitched
I would count it.

- EdTV (been years... really don't remember)
I wouldn't count it as a romcom.

- The Majestic (never seen it but is listed that way in profiler???)
It's been a while, but as far as I remember it is a more serious romance movie with a touch of comedy.

- Miss Congeniality (Seems more straight Comedy... but definitely some romance in it)
For me it is more like a regular comedy. The romance is a minor side-plot and not the main focus of the movie.

Depends if I am in a romcom mood on that weekend. Probably yes.

According to the cover, Saundra gets 4th billing in "The Thing Called Love".  I think Samantha Mathis is in this.  I remember her but haven't seen her name anywhere in awhile.

That is what I thought too... but then seen it listed as romance in Profiler. One of these days I need to finish going through my genre lists!

River Phoenix, too and his last role. Directed by Peter Bogdanovich, who is a film historian like Scorcese, known for incisive documentaries on Orson Welles, Hitchcock and others, plus responsible for The Last Picture Show, I thought this was shaping up to be worth a look. I found this review at Empire and it sounds like a bit of harmless fluff given undeserved scrutiny because of River's death, but it also revealed that it is the one Sandra Bullock movie Pete will never want to see...
