Glee (Fox)
« on: November 10, 2009, 03:09:23 AM »
When Joss Whedon praised another TV show in the past, it was usually worth to pay attention (Veronica Mars, BSG, Terminator: TSCC). But since he did disappoint me with his own lacklustre Dollhouse, I wonder if he can be trusted anymore? The latest thing he mentioned is "Glee" on Fox. Of course, since he is about to direct an episode there, it might be all self-promotional.

Has anyone seen it?

I've seen some of the episodes..I still have a few more to catch up on online.
The show is entertaining, though it is a little different for a show set in high school.  I like the music numbers.  Some of the other plot elements do seem a bit extreme, but the show is entertaining overall.

I watched the pilot and couldn't see the appeal of the show.

Same here. I saw the pilot and did not feel compelled to watch any more. I know some people who absolutly love it though.

I'm not loving it, but I do find some parts of it entertaining.

Three year necro-bump?

After Tom's marathon I grabbed the first half of season 1 which I enjoyed (3.5/5) so am just about to start on Volume 2 which has the last 9 episodes of the set. I guess I just wanted to bump this for discussion and peoples views rather than make a mess in Tom's thread.

Anyway, my main question for those that are current with the show is do the main cast leave the school and carry on with life giving us new characters, or are they really pushing the realms of age reality?

For better or worse, they are doing both. They introduce new character for the school. Some of the old characters are said to be a year younger than some and still are going to school. And most of the others have regular appearances. Either showing them in New York, or having them surprise visit.
This leads to too many characters and in my opinion the character growth (especially of the new characters) suffers from this. In addition: Some of the new characters are more or less carbon copies of the characters which have left.

I was caught out by the way Sue really is in episode 17 of season 1  (episode 4 of the volume 2 set). Watching her be so kind to her mentally ill sister after she donates her share of the money from the Olivia Newton-John video for a few benches took her character to a new level rather than just being a grade A bitch and they didn't overdo the sentimentality. Very well done.

Although Pete loves his TV shows, somehow I think he's going to skip this one.

Pete, contrary to you I've no problem with music and I was unable to endure that show the first time I catched it on TV.

See even people without a musical distaste can find that show boring and cheesy.

Watched episodes 1-10 of season two pver the last week and like the fact it is concentrating more on the music with some good guest stars rather than the teen melodrama. Also, more secondary characters getting more screen time, especially Artie and Brittany.
