3D cinema, who gets to keep the glasses?
« on: October 17, 2009, 09:01:22 PM »
Ok so I went to see Up in 3D in the week it was amazing, and if you have not seen it in 3D or seen it at all don't let the experience of other 3D films discourage your from watching it!

Ok so, I went with a few friends and out side the cinema was a box to put your glasses after you viewed the movie, they even said as we walked in "don't forget to give your glasses back at the end"  :/ now, Im all in favor of returning them... But, if I am paying an extra £2 to see the movie, with that cost going on the glasses surely I should be allowed to keep them? My friends were fairly divided on this question and I wanted to get the views of a wider community.

So, for those of you who visit the cinema. Should we be able to keep the 3D glasses we pay extra for? or should we return them to the cinema at the end of the film?

I went to two different 3D cinemas recently. At one I didn't have to pay extra for the glasses and they were collecting them again at the exit.
But last week I went to a cinema where I had to pay an extra 2 euros for the glasses. So I kept them  8)
Although I must admit that there wasn't any obvious sign asking us to return them. And they were still wrapped in plastic when we got them. So I wasn't sure if we were even expected to return them. If I thought we were expected to, I would have.

Count me in the club.

Now this may be a stupid questions but is there any 3D movie on DVD sold with the special glasses ?  I'm very curious about 3D movies but I don't go watch movies in theaters anymore.....................the incompetence of the people who set the sound (that is the guy who charges a fortune only to put the volume level at 98% and leave) takes away all the fun.

I personally hate it. The 3D gimmick is not worth the color shift in the image.

At the theater here, there is a big box thing outside that says to please put the glasses in to recycle them, but I've never seen employees enforcing that.  I have kept them a few times, and other times put them in there.

I have one DVD that has the 3D version too.

It came with the older style 3D glasses, with the two different colors for the lenses.  I tried watching the movie in 3D.  I even did what the disc suggested and had the lights off.  I only noticed a few things that seemed to be in 3D..otherwise most of the movie was just normal except for the color being screwy.  I did try a pair of the glasses I had from the theater and they didn't work.  After a while, my eyes were hurting and I gave up and switched to the normal version to watch the rest of the movie.
Since then I heard some report about 3D and how it doesn't work right on televisions.  The 3D on DVDs isn't the same type of 3D that is being used in theaters now, and there isn't a way to get the new type of 3D to work on televisions now, though a few companies are supposed to be developing televisions that will work with the new 3D.  I think Sony is one of them.
I have seen about 5 movies in 3D at the theater now..my first was UP.  I like 3D in the theater, but it sucks at home.  It doesn't work right and the messed up colors are annoying.

Unfortunately a normal LCD TV would not be able to cope with cinema style 3D, there just not high tech enough yet!

There are TV's in development that will support 3D but they won't be out for year, and when they are im sure they will be very expensive and not worth it.

3D only seems to work well with animation right now, pretty much all of UP had little 3D bits.

The home 3D with the glasses is horrible, and 90% of the time don't work effectively.

So, I always think if im paying extra for something, I shouldn't have to give it back! If I was getting my money back for the glasses then I would return them.. but at the same time I have all my 3D glasses all labelled for the film I got them whilst watching! I keep my cinema tickets too... I guess there just memorabilia.

I currently have a Plasma and an LCD LED TV. Do you know if LED can support 3D?

No, as I said... there are currently no available screens that can cope with cinema scale 3D.
