The Cactus is dead, long live the Cacti!
« on: May 09, 2009, 05:47:16 PM »
Or "How to make nine out of one".

I had my cactus for many years - at least 15 as far as I remember and no matter how badly I treated it, it grew and grew and grew.

In the end, it looked like this:

The problem was that it was standing in that kitchen window and had become an immovable and unhandleable object which was likely to keel over soon.

So I decided to kill it but salvage some of the leaves (sorry, I forgot to close the blinds this time):

And now I have begun anew:

I've used more than 50 liters of fresh earth to fill these three flower boxes and even though I wore gloves I still have cacti spikes in my fingers...

Sounds like a sequel to the film with Arnie; while IMDb lists it as The Villain it's original or at least UK title was Cactus Jack...

A class of elementary students wanted to make a planter to take home and wanted to have a plant in it that was easy to take care of, so it was decided to use cactus plants. The students planted the cactus seeds in the planters and they grew nicely but unfortunately they were not allowed to take the planters home.

A look at the photo below explains why.

The cactus plants were removed and small ivy plants replaced them and the children were then allowed to take them home.

The cactus plants had seemed like a good idea at the time...

Wow, what a FAIL.

Reminds me of the unfortunate Jesus light switch (which was posted at Invelos or here before....?).

You know.. While I do see the "fail" in the design (both the cactus clown pots above and the Jesus light switch.. and plenty of others).. I will never understand why it's such a big deal. Why prevent the child from bringing the plants home? It's a plant.. in a pot. What the hell is wrong with that? If we were to start banning anything that can invoke phallic and sapphic imagery, there's a whole lot of stuff that nobody would use anymore..

People need to calm down.

I mean, a plant in a pot is a problem.. yet suggestive, almost sexual dancing is music videos and other stuff is OK?

Man.. What kind of society are we living in these days .....

sorry for the rant... won't happen again... until it happens again

I am totally with you on the clown issue. I doubt the kids would hav made any association like that and I couldn't care less myself.

I do consider the Jesus thing a FAIL.

But, to be clear, I find these really funny and if I could would even be someone who might buy such light switch and use it at home.

Does your nan have green skin and prickles?  ???

I know what you mean; just pulling your leg! My aunt used to have them too.

While I actually don't have any right now, I like Cacti for their lack of need of water.
