I was going to protest my innocence for daring to suggest a director who'd already been listed, before I noticed Shyamalan's entire back catalogue!

I was going to suggest that Spielberg had a cameo in Duel. You can see him on the back seat of the car... I don't think it was intended though!

And yes, I think a cameo should be uncredited. Otherwise I bagsy Braveheart!

Often so, but not necessarily, AFAIK.  A cameo is a bit part played by someone (a famous actor, the director, etc.) who would ordinarily not take it.

Quoting an entertainment glossary:

Originally meaning "a small piece of artwork", the term was borrowed by director Michael Anderson (I) when attempting to attract famous actors to play bit parts in Around the World in 80 Days (1956).
