A personal favorite genre of mine is sports movies; Brian's Song, Rudy, Invincible, Field of Dreams, Miracle, Raging Bull, etc.

I'm afraid I've seen every one in my collection (more than once! ) and I'm looking to add some new ones.

Any suggestions?

Just listing what comes to mind, I'm not actually recommending or not recommending any except for "The Hurricane" which is a true story.

I'm not much of a sports fan at all, but there are a couple of sports films I like. It's the great thing about the movies, that a film maker should be able to find the common ground of a story and apply it to anywhere.

So, I like Escape to Victory (another Michael Caine film not in the Michael Caine film thread  ) about prisoners of war playing football (or soccer if you're a strange American!). Also stars lots of actual players, like Pele and Sylvester Stallone. I haven't seen it for years so it'll probably be rubbish these days. 

In a League of their Own is a bit daft, but I do like it. Set in wartime again, all the blokes are away so a team is formed of women. I was very disappointed about the lack of shower scenes. 

Boxing is well represented of course, my favourites being Raging Bull and Million Dollar Baby. Pool is represented in classic fashion by The Hustler.

I saw Wimbledon when it was on telly during this years, erm, Wimbledon . It's painting by numbers film making, with most of what happens being utterly ridiculous outside the world of movies and clichés so obvious they're almost sign-posted. However, it is harmless fun and I did like the way they filmed the matches. Paul Bettany is always worth watching and you can hear what he's thinking while playing, which is genuinely funny as his mind wanders. It's better than actual tennis anyway, unless Daniela Hantuchova is playing. Again with the  and likely with the  .

Not a bad movie, based on true facts.  It's unfortunate that it was turned into a cheap comedy with Rosie and Madonna.  Geena Davis plays decently which is probably not easy when you have to deal with TV and Pop stars who can't act.

Well, I'm not a sports fan either, and I'm usually confused with movies that have some sport as a major plot device because usually I have no idea what the game is all about.

However, one of the best I've seen is the Steve James documentary Hoop Dreams, about two very young men struggling to become professional basketball players. There is a very nice edition made by Criterion on it. Very moving and well done.

I am not a big fan of Sports as well (reflection of ral life, I guess). I do occasionally enjoy them though, depending on the story or if they are funny.

Slap Shot is crap.  A very violent movie that has nothing to do with real ice hockey.   I never understood why Newman wasted his talent in that stupidity.
