I have 1771 titles, each and every one legit. I bought 2 questionable ones on ebay, and never bought there again. Both have been destroyed with extreme prejudice! (they were used as target pratice, with bow and arrow as well as a .22 rifle)

It sounds like you guys have some serious collections! I have to ask, are they all 100% legitimate copies or are there boot legs included in there? My collection is only at 349 but they are all legit dvds. However I do have multi-copies of some of my personal favorites.

I've bought my first DVD in 2003 so I wasn't a very early converted, before that I was more a renter than a buyer. I can't honestly say that I'm a big fan of the mainstream cinematic industry sometimes I tried something that everyone talk about, but most of the time I'm not really impress. I prefer to watch any David Friedman or Michael Findlay movies than what is call film today.

Now to answer your question : I currently own 1055 dvd (movies and TV series) and a very little part of it (44) is on dvd-r. All those movies are currently not available commercially and they will probably never bee. When one of them is release I buy the release immediatly. But without that I would have never seen some of my favourite movies like : Bonnie's Kids, The All-American Girl, Beach Blanket Bango or The Fantastic Four (not the one you think about, but the never release movie directed by Roger Corman in 1994).

So unlike everyone else I'm not again grey zone dvd, but there are a big difference between unavailable movie and a rip of a commercially available product.

I've been collecting since early 1997. Of the 1800+ titles I have (box set counts as one whether it's a box set of movies or a TV series), all are legitimate. A lot of guilty pleasures among those but, like my children, I love each of them for what they are.

As far as I know everything I own is ligit... I know that everything I ever bought is at least... can't say 100% for sure on the stuff that was given to me.

Actually no not everything... I just remembered a friend of mine gave me a couple old movie serials that is home made (he recorded himself off VHS).

We don't get out much. New blood... I mean, face, shows itself? That's cause for celebration. 

My collection is all legit, bar one. Bootleg of the Japanese cut of Kill Bill. I keep it because I know I'll be first in line when (if) QT releases The Whole Bloody Affair. It was from Ebay and apart from one other, I've never had a problem, so I'll never understand the reluctance with Ebay. Yes, it's full of pirates, but it's very easy to sail past. As I've told people before, you see an auction item you fancy bidding on, send me the link and I'll say whether I'd trust it or not. I've only been wrong that once! I'm talking about more mainstream titles than Jimmy's though. He has a fascinating collection that must be pretty hard to judge on second-hand sites.

Well, since we are all introducing outselves:

I started collecting DVDs in early 1999. Bought the first one (Small Soldiers) before I even had a player. Been continuously buying since, each year more than the year before .

In my early days I bought some questionable DVDs (I live in Asia and it's easy to fall for those). I have since replaced all of those with legit copies or destroyed them unreplaced (they are often of bad quality and full frame).

I have recently begun to purchase Blu-ray.

I bought my first DVD late in 2003. Since then my collection's grown to 327. I do have a lot of DVD-Rs (but I keep them in a separate collection and not counted in the 327) and they are all stuff I've recorded off TV using my PVR.

BTW, I'm more of a Lurker here. I enjoy reading all the posts and discussions going on but don't post too much myself.

If box sets are counted as 1, I have 764 (movies and TV sets).  If you count the number of movies in the box sets, I have closer to 1000-1100.  I was given two bootlegs once and ended up buying both of them on DVD to have legit copies.  And one of those I now have on HD DVD as well.

Most, if not all, of us use DVD Profiler to track our collections.  Since you sound like you just happened upon this site, what do you use (if anything)?

Honestly, I just use Microsoft Word. I have a list in alphabetical order and I update it as I get new dvd's. It has worked for me so far.

I think you should try DVD Profiler to keep track of your collection. You can have it for free and add up to 50 titles. That should be enough to give you an idea.

For "Must Haves".  I'd say you must have what you feel like owning.  I paid for some movies that I thought were "Must haves" and they turned out to be a waste of money because I didn't like them and will never watch them again.

Understandable, but I like to hear other peoples opinions on films and find out what ones really stand out in their minds as great accomplishments or just all around amazing movies.

Myself for example, I could watch anyone of these movies over an over again:
Lord of The rings - The entire trilogy
From Dusk Till Dawn - Only the original
Reservoir Dogs - Basically any Tarantino movie is at the top of my list
The Rock - Nick Cage - really enjoyed this movie when it was first released and it stuck with me
Transformers - loved it!!
American Beauty - didnt expect me to say that one! Have to say, I was really impressed
Salton Sea - underrated, but realy good

I could go on for a while but you get the drift....

Honestly it's a question of taste, it depends of what you like. I'm not really sure that what I see as "must have" is on many peoples list  

But since you ask : The Opening of Misty Beethoven, Man Bites Dog, Cannibal Holocaust, Score and Goodfellas

edit : watching your list I don't think that we have the same taste

One movie I've been pleasantly surprised with recently is The Quiet. A nice little drama.

Going by what I've seen, anything by Michel Gondry, IMO, is also very interesting: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind & La Science des Rêves

And I'm with you about Transformers: Loved the live-action adaptation! Can't wait for Chapter 2!
