Google Chrome
« on: September 02, 2008, 01:06:39 PM »
http://www.google.com/chrome [link doesn't work yet] is supposed to go live today according to their blog http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2008/09/fresh-take-on-browser.html

Is anyone aware of this? I have not heard of it till this morning. I use a whole bunch of Google apps and will most likely try this out.

I saw a post about it yesterday. Can't wait to see what they did!

I'm liking already!

Though I already know Firefox will be kept not too far away.. I have some extensions I can barely live without. Wonder if they'll ever be ported over?

But it's nice. Gmail and Reader are very quick to load (compared to Firefox). I'll have to test first startup time of Chrome after a reboot though.

EDIT

Woohoo! Already had the chance of testing the separate process concept! I love it! The tab itself crashed. Not the whole browser!

I'm really missing the multiple search engines from FF. Anyone find out if this is possible here?

Actually kinda funny - I had IMBd set as the last search place. When I imported my FF info to Chrome it set my default search engine as IMDb  :-[ (Took me too long to find out how to fix it  :bag: )

My scroll wheel on my mouse is only working down - no scroll up. Anyone else? (I did confirm someone else is having a similar issue wiuth his scroll on his laptop pad)

I am usually very vary about anything concerning Google (I feel like it's becoming real-world SkyNet  ), but this browser looks very promising. I wonder why no one else has implemented multiple processes for tabs before. Seems like a logical step. This is something which solves one of the biggest gripes I had with existing browsers.

But now I am already missing AdBlock :(

Scrolling works fine for me.

I see they've nicked the "Speed Dial" homepage idea from FF! Haven't tried Chrome yet though.

Rick, I just saw at Invelos that you had the same thought regarding SkyNet and Google as me

Well, it's possible, but not the same way as Firefox did it. You can right-click the bar at the top and go to "Edit search engine". From there, you can assign keyword to searches. For example, I set "a" for Amazon.ca, "wiki" for Wikipedia, so on and so forth. So Google is default if I type nothing, but if I type "a Rambo", it'll search Amazon.ca for Rambo.

Great minds...

Hmmmmm I use an intellimouse explorer with its software (although I use an 4 old version of the software.... it's the only one where I can set "esc" as one of my options on the programmable buttons). I wonder if that could be it.

Anyone else having scroll issues?

EDIT - I see it works OK for Sebastien... sux for me

Another thing I am missing is "Undo closed tabs". And this is something which will probably not work as the whole process is killed when a tab is closed. But this is a small price to pay. I always was disappointed with Firefox how much memory it took up in a relatively short amount of time. I often had half a gig memory consumption solely from Firefox after browsing YouTube for example.

On one thing it's really noticable, that separate processes are used. Usually I open up threads in a new tab via middle mouse-click. And this often has a short pause in Firefox while the tab is starting to load. This is not noticable in Chrome.

I like the integrated Task-Manager which only shows the processes attached to Chrome :)
