Well, that depends on the player. Some players have a hidden/undocumented menu to be activated by pressing some numbers on the remote control. If you have the exact name of your player model you could try google to find a region free setting. I did this with my Philips. With the default manufacturer setting it did only allow R2 dvd's. After the tweak I was able to play R1 dvd's as well.  :)

For the typical US-setup changing the region of the player might not suffice. The equipment will have to be able to play PAL too.
While nearly all PAL-capable equipment can play NTSC too, I'm not entirely sure that it works the other way.
