Tell us about your buying habits.

I've always been curious as to how people buy DVD's. What makes you buy something ? Do you buy new releases when they come out, do you have a price limit on a single DVD, do you wait for sales ?
Personally I still have a small collection so I have a lot to catch up on. I never buy single dvd's that are more than 10$ unless they are french canadian movies (because the limited market keeps the prices fairly high). I check sales at places like future shop, pharmacies etc. I buy online, mostly from cinemamontreal.com because they have good prices.
Of course I don't mind paying the price for things I really want but I prefer spending less to buy old movies I've never seen. So far I haven't been disapointed more than once or twice.

I buy a lot, too much really. I like to buy new releases on release day, but I'm finally starting to realise that it's useless. I have such a large backlog of unwatched stuff, that I'm just paying too much for them. I don't like bargain bin shopping too much, because usually they are all mixed up in the bin and I'm always scared of buying something I already have. Anyway, I buy almost exclusively online now. I used to buy at the cheapest price I could find and didn't mind having a few orders backordered, but since the DVDSoon fiasco, I tend to not mind paying more to buy from a more reputable seller that has a brick and mortar branch, like FutureShop, BestBuy or Archambault.
As to how I decide what to buy, well I'll usually browse release lists on TheDigitalBits, VideoETA and CinemaMontreal, and if a title and/or cover catches my eye, I'll go to IMDb and read some user review and then decide if it's interesting or not. Of course, for big releases I don't have to do all that. I'll also tend to hunt movies that star actors/actresses I've seen in other material.

No real reasoning to what I buy and when. I get a monthly check... so I place 1 fairly big monthly order. I pretty much just go with what mood hits me when looking through the DVD site. I will also juggle around what I want to order... to get the most of what I want for the money I have... I placed my July order just this morning... ended up ordering..
For Me...
- Masters of Horror: Screwfly Solution
- Highway to Heaven: Season 1
- Secrets of Isis: The Complete series
- Home Improvement: Season 1
- Beyond Reality: Season 1
- Unrest
- ER: Season 3
- Batman Beyond: Season 2
For my daughter...
- Ben 10: Season 1
- Best of The Hardy Boys Classic Collection: Three Stories (Book)
- Best of Nancy Drew Classic Collection: Three Stories (Book)

Why do you think I've set a price limit of 10$ on my DVD's, I can't control myself. I don't remember how they call this form that you can sign in casinos to have stop you from going in but we should have that for dvd stores.

Not ignoring the thread, I just don't have any habits anymore. Fact is, due to some financial ...issues I had to sell around 350 DVDs a couple of months ago.
Right now I buy what can when I can. Sales are good (duh). Not much of an online buyer. I work at home so I don't get out much. When I do go out it's fun to browse the DVD sections.

Usually I see an announcment of a movie in TV and think by myself: That one you could add to your collection.
Or I do take a stroll trough the local DVD markets (around here in Germany that would be Karstadt, Müller and Media-Markt, Saturn). The last two ones are usually a bit more expensive without having better service but when they have special offers one can buy a whole pile of DVDs at once.
But my primary DVD shop is Amazon at several Domains (.de, .co.uk, .com, .jp).
I always loved TV shows but over the last year I bought more and more of them and less movies. Firstly because one gets more screen-minutes per Euro and secondly TV shows often tell far better stories, especially if they have a continued story-line like Lost or Galactica.
But sometimes I buy DVDs just for completeness' sake. I've got Star Wars IV - VI and even though I don't like the prequels, I bought the DVDs nonetheless.
My last aquisition was the complete "Xena" series (6 seasons) as Limited Edition from an UK eBayer. I paid 150 £ + 15 £ (245 € / 335 $):

I buy most DVDs online, as I live in Taiwan.
Releases here are are often barebones, sometimes full screen (
). Besides, I'd be almost the only one doing the profiles
I therefore buy in bursts. Either a bunch from my Wish List has been released (so yes, I often buy upon release) or I just feel it's been too long since my last order
If I am not careful, I go overboard and order too many (my Wish List is long...). So far I have been doing bad this year, my plan to cut down is soooo bot working out. It's the middle of the year and I already bought 2/3 of the quantity I bought last year
