Topic: Top Ten Discussion thread

Following lovemunkey's request, let's discuss separately...

I found this:

Off the top of my head (in no particular order for the moment)

x. The Godfather II
x. Short Circuit II
[...]

Now, I just gotta ask how these two films can possibly end up right next to each other in a Top Ten list. As you put them in no particular order, you must have thought of them one after the other, which obviously makes one wonder...



So, how did you guys choose those ten films? By "quality", obviously as you would feel about that? Or by personal liking? Or a mix of both?

Well, I went purely by liking, which is one reason things like The Godfather are not on my list.

Hahahaha! I did specify in no particular order especially because of things like Short Circuit ending up right next to The Godfather. And yes, you are right, I thought of them one after the other.

Now, how did I choose? I went purely on enjoyment of the movie, and how eager I'd be to watch it again. I've put no importance whatsoever to awards, general critics consensus, etc. I went purely on personal preference. Which is, IMO, what this top ten thread should be about.

It's also the first 10 movies that came to mind. So some of those might change. Like whenever I see The Dark Knight

Agreeably. I just came ip with the question when I was considering whether I should have Godfather on my list or not.

...and with Short Circuit 2 on your list, I sure hope that was about personal enjoyment only... (nothing wrong with "guilty pleasures)

Well actually, I love that movie. It's not just a guilty pleasure. It's actually a movie I thoroughly enjoy.

I haven't posted my list yet because I'm not sure I will as I find a top 10 to be too short.  A top 25 would have been more appropriate IMO because once I've chosen my top 2 or 3, there is more than 7 which I would rate equally so I wouldn't know how to "drop" some of them.

If I do however make that list, I will just try to select the top 10 movies in my collection that would be the last 10 I'd let go if I had to part with all my DVD's

I agree with Eric, but that's why a top ten has to be the absolute very best films you could ever wish to see. And yes, that's likeability, not just critically. It's similar thinking behind when I posted the Favourite Movie thread. One title only. The absolute most favourite, no discussion (Dances With Wolves), preferably life-changing choice for number one.

I just realised I need to change my list already; somehow forgot a very important one...

Oh yes, and should we really allow trilogies, mentioning no names (CoughkarstenCough!)?

It appears that this unnamed (CoughkarstenCough!) person actually did the same as another that shall not be mentioned (CoughRossroyCough!) but did that in the post just above the one being put in question here..

But now the real question is should this forum allow criticism from people who don't blame the correct person for starting a trend, of couse mentioning no names (CoughJonCough!)

It may be that someone considers the Lord of the Rings to be one single long movie, instead of a trilogy.

I could agree with that. But "someone" listed Star Wars original trilogy and those loosely make up one story, but I'd say they are distinctly different. And no-one could surely pick Back to the Future as a trilogy because part 2 is rubbish... Like calling Godfather a trilogy when it is clearly two films of the very highest quality, and a turd.

Empire are asking for votes for top tens to make up a new 500 greatest films list. No way would they accept multiple entries...

I usually watch these trilogies en bloc so I see no point to split them up

Agreed, I think The Godfather is one of the most overrated movie in history.

So that's you then... wrong. But hey, you don't like it, you don't like it. Overrated though? Noooooo. No, no, no. I can't think of another film that more easily ingratiates itself with the viewer regardless of background. You can be a film nerd about it, or a casual viewer; somehow it gets to one and all and it doesn't date.

I've just watched the trilogy again actually over this last weekend. Part III is better than I remember, though still very weak in comparison. But I think De Niro's scenes as the young Vito are possibly the best produced in American film. I was struck by a sense that everything was truly perfect.

PS: Karsten, you call it boring? You count Lord of the Rings amongst your favourites and that's just people walking! Even the trees f***ing walked in those movies...   (thanks to Kevin Smith and Clerks 2)

I didn't think of it until I was at work that some people would class trilogies as single entries in their T10's.

I should've added it as a third rule. Lets face it no trilogy is perfect, and there will always be one that has got the slight edge for you e.g. LOTR:Return of the King has got way too many endings.
