So which version should I get...?

The Criterion is sharper, but not anamorphic, while the Anchor Bay has more extras (DVDBeaver.com).

In the UK there seems to be DVDs from 2005, 2006 and one from 2007 (The 2007 seems to match the R1 Anchor Bay release.)

2007? Not sure. The one I have is the as what I see on sale now; 2006 25th Anniversary edition, in a rather nice metal slipcase. More importantly, it's two discs and even a DTS remix. I had the earlier single disc release and it's a big improvement. I know some people are quite precious about things like that and certainly the Predator remix is awful, but I liked this. The theme is very brash and suits being loud and enveloping!

Edit: I just remembered, my edition also includes the CD soundtrack. Perhaps that isn't included anymore, reflected in a new release date.

Another edit  : I notice Get Carter is under a fiver now as well. Those of you who had some notion that Sly Stallone was Jack Carter should take the opportunity for education at that price...

The R1 release is 1 disc only, but seems to have the same special features. I would assume the transfer is the same. Not sure when I have another R2 order ready (only order from amazon.co.uk every so often), but I'll try to throw it in there. It often feels "right" to buy british films in their UK version...

Usually the Criterion is better no matter what, there is only few exceptions. However, of course some of their older release have been bettered by others studios later on...

The thing against Criterion is also the cost. Much as I love their releases, it can't be that much better than this current budget (well pretty much) release and so I couldn't warrant finding out.

Same with Sullivan's Travels. I recently bought the R2 for 3.99, then upgraded to a seven film Preston Sturges boxset for £12. It gets to the point that I can't afford to care what extras are on the Criterion.
