What TV Series did you discover on DVD?
« on: June 14, 2007, 11:29:15 AM »
OK... I am sure I am not the only one... so I have to ask... what series did you first discover on DVD? (TV Show Blind Buys) and what did you think of them?

Here is my list...

- 24 (I first saw this one on DVD... and I was quick to not only buy the next set... but also became one of the shows I never miss when it airs!)
- Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. (Watched the first disc of the so far... loving it!)
- Alias (Love it! After the first season was watched I went straight to my computer and ordered Season 2!)
- Arrested Development (A Friend gave me the complete series [all 3 sets] a good comedy... but I wouldn't say a favorite)
- The Buccaneers (Only watched 3 eps so far... but really enjoying it)
- Burns and Allen (Classic comedy that I have 2 cheap best of discs... would love to see more... hilarious show!)
- Cleopatra 2525 (Cheesy Sci-Fi Fun!... what more can you ask?)
- Dexter (Unwatched)
- Dinotopia: The Series (Unwatched)
- Dracula: The Series (A fun Saturday morning show... was geared towards kids... but I enjoyed it too!)
- The Ellen Show (Ellen's Second Attempt on a sitcom... decent Show... but see why it only lasted 1 season)
- Firefly (Awesome Show! Ended so much earlier then it should have!)
- Frasier (Never seen till brother bought me the first season... started a little rocky for me.. but grew on me. Now want to get more seasons!)
- Game Over (decent cartoon... but not surprised it got canceled)
- Good Morning World (a sitcom from the 60's with Goldie Hawn... was fun... but one of the most aggravating themes I ever had to sit through!)
- Grey's Anatomy (I really enjoy this one too!)
- Harsh Realm (A really cool army/war/sci-fi series created by Chris Carter)
- Hunter (Great cop show... a shame only 3 seasons was released)
- Kindred: The Embrace (Vampire/Mob series... only lasted 8 episodes... but very enjoyable)
- Kingdom Hospital (Limited Series by Stephen King... only meant to last 1 season... starts off slow..but I ended up loving it!)
- Kolchak: The Night Stalker (Classic Horror series... Watched the first disc so far... really enjoying it!)
- Lost (All I can say is... I Love It!)
- Masters of Horror (One of my new favorite shows!... only watch on DVD)
- Mutant X (Good series... need to change my volumes for season sets!... If I could find them!)
- My Hero (a hilarious sitcom from the UK that I would love to get every episode of!)
- Nowhere Man (Unwatched)
- One Step Beyond (A great classic series similar to The Twilight Zone)
- Planet of the Apes (only watched Disc 1 so far... but really enjoying it)
- Picket Fences (This one is a strange one for me... I find it way too preachy... but at the same time I love every second of it... and hope to see the rest of the series released!)
- Point Pleasant (Unwatched)
- S.W.A.T. (Classic cop show... really enjoyed it... wish they would release season 2!)
- Scrubs (Hilarious hospital sitcom)
- Sherlock Holmes (Really enjoyable classic mystery series)
- Sledge Hammer! (only watched 1 disc so far... early to judge but looks pretty funny)
- Sports Night (Was probably my first TV Series Blind Buy... really enjoyed it)
- Stacked (Unwatched)
- Surface (Only watched the first disc... so far having a hard time getting into it.)
- Tabitha (Spin-off of Bewitched... really enjoyed it)
- Twilight Zone - original (Awesome classic show! Loving every minute of it!)
- Without a Trace (This is a pretty good crime drama that I am looking forward to checking out more seasons of)
- V: The Complete Series (Unwatched)

There's way too many honnestly. I never watch TV, so basically anything TV series I bought on DVD, I also discovered on DVD. But let's see what I can come up with.

Star Trek (all of them): I love it. Of course I had seen some episodes here and there and liked them, but I had never watch everything, in sequence. I loved every minute of it.
Buffy / Angel: Both discovered on DVD. Bought completely blind, I had yet to see a single episode. Loved it all too.
Firefly: After watching Buffy and Angel, the thought of another series by Joss Whedon was appealing. It didn't disappoint, it's one of my favorite.
The Office UK: LOVE IT! It started slow, took me a little while to get into it, but once I finally "got it", it was really fullfilling. It's the only TV series I went right back to watch a second time.
Fortier (Quebec police series): I have mixed feeling about this one. I liked it, but the clumsyness and the habits of some of the characters get tiresome on DVD as there's just too much of it, and it becomes distracting. Still, I very worthwhile watch.
Lexx: I love it... mostly. I loved seasons 1, 3 and 4. They had a nice rythm, it was a great off-beat and odd universe that managed to tell a good story without falling too much to the wacky side. Season 2 was a mixed bag. There are some great episode, but some are so abysmal I almost didn't buy S3 and 4. Season 2 lacks focus and direction. It's like a mish mash of highly uneven episodes. But overall, it was a good buy too.
Tru Calling: This was a great show. It shouldn't have been cancelled. I'll admit it started a bit slow, but once the Tru/Jack dynamic was established, they were headed for complete greatness. I'm really mad they cancelled it, although I discovered it way too late.
Tipping the Rift: This was a disappointment. The premise is interesting, and they could go to great places, but it's like they limit themselves and stay a bit too childish. Missed opportunity if you ask me. Yet, I'll still buy seasons 2 and 3, so it wasn't all bad (and I'm a completist)
Roswell: Great show. Loved it.
24: Well this doesn't need any presentation. And I can only say 1 thing: Watch it on DVD!! Tried following S6 on TV, but gave up after 5 episodes, it's much better on DVD.
Alias: That was an awesome ride! Betrayal, counter-betrayal, surprises at every turn, cliffhangers that make you run out to the store to buy the next set. It had it all.
Futurama: I love the Simpsons. Probably the only show I'll actually seek out to watch on TV. So when Futurama came out on DVD, I didn't hesitate half a second, and it was in my hands. I loved it!
CSI (and spin-offs): Great shows. I haven't seen much of Miami (only S1) yet, and none of NY as of now, but I've watch the first 4 seasons of CSI, and just the idea of following professional CSIs makes the great!
Charmed: This one I'm odd about it. I loved season 1, and I've bought every other seasons since, but I've yet to watch any of them. It's one of those shows I never watched on TV, but heard so much about, that when it came out on DVD, even though I didn't know much about it, I had to have it all.
Lost: Don't need to say anything, I love it!
Battlestar Galactica (the new series): I love it!
Veronica Mars: I bought it cause I was interested, but I was scared it would be too "high school". What I found is an enjoyable investigative show. It was really good.

and if you go to my website (click my sig), every TV series you see there, I've bought blind. All maybe except Transformers and Voltron, which I watched when I was young. But X-Files, Starge SG-1, Dinosaurs, Wonderfalls, Alien Nation, Cleapatra 2525, Earth 2, Dark Angel, Doctor Who, Farscape, Red Dwarf, Smallville, etc. I bought, have yet to watch, and for most, have yet to see a single episode (except X-Files, Red Dwarf and Farscape, for which I've seen of few episodes).

and let's not even start about Anime.. most are TV series in Japan, so would fit in this thread, and I bought each and every one totally blind, using only the anime recommendation database to compare shows to each other and see what people recommend when you've liked this or that show. And you know what? I have yet to buy an Anime series and not like it!

Now you judge.. do I simply have an open mind? Or just low expectations of entertainment?  :-\

LOL... I am right there with you on the low expectations or open mind... I love a little bit of everything! And definitely not afraid to blind buy a TV Series! :)

a couple notes on your list...
Star Trek... I seen a little on TV own a little on DVD... would love to buy them all but they are so damned expensive!

Buffy/Angel... I have 'em all! I love 'em all! :) I agree with you on Joss Whedon... that is how I found Firefly as well!

Tru Calling... Don't get me started! I am still pissed at FOX on how they treated this series!

Charmed... one of my all time favorite shows... I must have them all! and have just recently pre-ordered the final season! :)

Veronica Mars... really enjoyed it since the first episode originally aired... I am still upset they canceled it!

Smallville and Veronica Mars

Smallville Rocks! Love that show.

Veronica Mars was pretty good. I enjoyed it but it wasn't one of those where I had to keep watching (like Smallville)

Stargate SG-1: I'd seen a few episodes on Showtime forever ago but never got into it. Then, about a year ago, I found season one on sale, then immediately went about getting the rest as quick as my wallet would allow.

Now, I've got season 10 on the way and still curse Sci-Fi for cancelling it. They don't mind showing the worst d-movies and showing that tripe with Kristanna Lokken or whatever her name is....

Now I'm looking for the next great show I've been missing.

I'm weird about TV. Even if I enjoy something, I struggle to commit to watching it and forget about when it's on. I'm waiting for My Name is Earl to come down in price a little, because that's a perfect example. Not too many bought blind, but ...

Firefly - Like you I was a massive Buffy fan, so just bought this as soon as it was available.
Black Books (complete series 1 to 3) - I really liked Spaced and this is a little more surreal, but from the same sort of minds. Any fans of Shaun of the Dead / Hot Fuzz should enjoy both.
Battlestar Galactica - I've got both the miniseries and season 1. Haven't started them yet. Haven't seen even a clip on TV! You lot banging on about it on Invelos made me do it!

Not quite blind buys, but these I bought after seeing some of them on TV ...

Peep Show - Saw a one off episode years ago, couldn't get into it. Watched series four and loved it. Now have series 1 to 3 to watch.
24 - Like you, I saw season one and it was torture. By season two I had given up and was waiting for the DVD sets instead.
X-Files - regular obsessive, but somehow lost steam after season six. Catching up on DVD, I have all the seasons. Ironically I've lost steam again at the same point. Made it to nine, but damn it's a struggle. Possibly because it's rubbish. They really lost momentum. When I finally make it to the end, I'm selling off 8 and 9 at least.
Mind Body and Kick Ass Moves - Great show about martial arts from the BBC, but the schedules were screwed up.

By the way, Office fans, check out Ricky Gervais's next show called Extras. Two series, same sort of humour. Set around a guy and his friend who are extras. Each episode guest stars a big name, normally international like Ben Stiller, Samuel Jackson, Orlando Bloom, Kate Winslet (check out my pics in the guess the TV series game http://www.dvdcollectorsonline.com/index.php/topic,242.msg3287.html#msg3287 along with pics from Black Books, which none of you got!). Only one or two guests will go over your heads (Les Dennis), but it's still very funny.

Except for one I've yet failed to "discover" a show on DVD. I've seen episodes of all my TV shows on DVD on TV before (even if it were only 2 episodes like "24")

The only show I bought blindly was "Firefly".

PS: No, it's not quite true. I discovered Galactica 2003 on DVD, two years before it was shown on TV here.

I rarely watch series before buying them. That was the case with Alias, 24, Lost and a bunch of others.

Numero Uno, the totally, utterly, brilliantly fantastic.......    Firefly

Also

Harsh Realm       Dunno, started out as an interesting idea, and Madame Mole & I watched the first four episodes, but let it slip, although Madame liked it a lot and wants to go back to it.

Millenium      Oooh very difficult one this. Gripping stuff, but very dark & often disturbing imagry (we found we could never take more than one episode per session). We've got all three seasons, and are about half way through the first one. Again Madame liked it a lot and wants to go back to it, so we will one day.

Band Of Brothers       loved it!

Yet to be watched

From The Earth To The Moon      not watched yet, but as I work in, live & breathe the "space industry", I will enjoy it.

The Lone Gunmen      OK, so I know it was panned!!!   but what the heck

I have to add Friends here.

I watched an episode on TV now and then, but I was never that much interested.

After being advised from several friends I took a leap of faith and bought The One With All Ten Seasons. It arrived last week and I already watched two and a half season and my greatest fear is now that it will soon be over.

TV, isn't that what you watch DVDs on?
