Need an opinion.
« on: June 20, 2008, 05:37:46 PM »
Inetvideo has a big sale going on for HD-DVD movies.  They're all at 3.99 and 5.99.  I checked Future Shop's web site and I can get a LG Blu -Ray/HD-DVD reader for my computer which is connected to my TV via Component cables.

My question is.  Would it be worth it to get the 200$ reader and buy a good selection of those HD-DVD movies at 4$ a piece.  With the computer connected via component cables, would I still have a better quality than regular DVD's ?

My guess is that without being true HD (since my tv isn't anyway) it would probably give me an image comparable in quality to upconverting DVD players.

Whaddayathink ?

Yes, I believe you would have better picture than regular DVDs, even on a non-HD TV.  If nothing else, you should be able to enjoy the richer colors you get from HD.

Of course that doesn't mean it's worth buying into a dead format.  You'll have to figure that one out for yourself.  The only reason I pick up the occasional HD DVD is because I already have the player and enough discs to keep it around.  If I had nothing today, I'm not sure I'd go for it.  But that's me.

Personally I wouldn't do it.
What will you do, if the player breaks down down the line?
I don't think that you will get an HD-DVD compatible player in a few years. Maybe even sooner.

I'm like Mark, already had a player and some movies. I actually did get a Toshiba 1080P player after the format was declared dead and most of the stores had shipped theirs back (got a great price on it). Now I have a backup player. I am also considering a dual drive for the PC.

I don't know that I would start the investment now if you're not already in. Unless you plan on buying enough $5.00 HDDVDs to make up for th extra 200 your spending.

The Blu discs go on sale all the time. You can pick up many titles for around 12 bucks already. IMO it wont be long and you'll be able to get some for under 10.00.

Tough decision. My brother is considering doing the same. I believe he's leaning against doing it though and putting the $$$ into Blu

Thruth is I didn't consider the future, it is true that if my player dies on me in a few years I may end-up with a few hundred dollars worth of dvd's I can't watch.

I'd go for it. $4 to $6 is a very good price. And what if the player breaks down in a few years - lets say 3 to 4 years. We have no idea what will have happened by then. Will there still be players that can play HD-DVD? Maybe, maybe not.

What if? Everything is fine.

What if not? There's a chance that you don't even want to replace some of these discs because you've lost interest in these movies. Even if you are going to replace them with Blu-Rays, chances are that they will be much cheaper than nowadays. But maybe there's even yet another disc format or it's even file-only.

And even if HD DVD players aren't available in the future, it is already possible to convert your HD DVD to Blu-ray, if need be.

Personally I waited until the war was over before I started buying into HD. So apparently my recommendation will be against buying into a dead format as well.
