Norwand (North Face) - Question for our german friends.
« on: January 02, 2014, 11:18:17 PM »
I watched this movie yesterday and I am wondering how close to the truth it is.  Is this completely made up like most american 'true story" movies or is it actually historically accurate ?

Oh, I'm note sure actually that it's a german movie, I believe it could be swiss

For the most part Nordwand is historically correct. Some artistic license has been taken, but as far as I know not very much. A great film, by the way.

From what I know the movie is quite close to the historical events.
It's not a documentary though.

Quite a good documentary about the events from 1936 is a feature that is (too) about the 1985 attempt to complete the route chosen in1936 by Toni Kurz and his companions.

If you don't want to click through the 8 parts (and ~ 75 minutes):
It is available on DVD too

I suppose whatever happened on the mountain had to be imagined by the writer though.  How would anyone know anything about the details since all four climbers died ?

The thing about this attempt was, that it was the first time that it was completely observed by cameras from the ground-station.
After all the Nazis used (or at least wanted to use) this for their propaganda and they were real filing-freaks.

So when it comes to dialogues, they most likely are invented, the events didn't need to be.

Thanks for the information Michael, the movie does not really show this.  It shows people looking at them with telescopes but I did not realize that everything was filmed.
