Complete Series-Box
« on: November 11, 2007, 01:01:31 PM »
Hi,

do you own "Complete Series" boxes when the show lasted more than one season?

I've got three of them: Babylon 5, Xena and Friends.

Although I had the complete collection of B5 I couldn't resist to buy the complete set again. Partially because I helped design the box (Warner germany asked fans to a meeting and let them do some design suggestions) and partially because I wanted a set that looked consistent. Unfortunately Warner changed the design 3 times while publishing B5.

The problem with Xena is that in germany only the first season was released. And since I wanted the show I had the option of buying half season boxes or the entire set. So I bought the entire set.

Friends was (as explained earlier) a blind buy. But again I had the choice between season packs for 20€ each or 135€ for the entire package.

I also bought all six seasons of Highlander at the same time but it isn't a box set.

I have no complete series sets (I am talking about series where the seasons where first released separately and then a full series box followed) as I usually buy a series I am interested in from the beginning and I didn't feel the need to double-dip only because of different packaging yet.
The only complete series which you probably can count for this is Monty Python's Flying Circus 14-disc collection which was also avaible as smaller volumes.

One complete collection I am interested in is the definite collection of Twilight Zone. But I am hesitant to spend over 200$ on a single DVD purchase about something I am not sure I would like (never seen a complete episode of the original Twilight Zone).

Only stuff like Spaced (2 series) and Black Books (3 series), but as they are British sitcoms they don't amount to too much volume even collected together.

The ones I've actually bought as a single complete series box, are mostly Anime: Madlax, Noir, Gad Guard, Robotech Protoculture Collection, Paranoia Agent, Gunbuster, Adventures of Mini-Goddess, Ah My Goddess Premium Box, Wolf's Rain, RahXephon, and plenty others.

As for TV shows, most of the ones I have were released as complete series anyway, expect 1 (maybe 2): Six Feet Under, and Spaced (not sure about Spaced, I guess someone from UK could confirm).

Most every other series were bought season by season, because I just can't justify to buy a whole series a second time, just because of pretty packaging and an additional disc with useless extras. And I HATE studios for doing this. They reward those that are sitting on the sidelines waiting, instead of the fans that buy them as they come out.  :voodoo:

Spaced was released as separate series, then as a collected boxset.

Ah My Goddess Premium Box
Ah My Goddess has a second season which is currently released as single discs. And I am so glad that I had hold of buying the premium box (priced over 100$) and can now buy the re-release coming end of this month using slim cases for $37 :)
But animes are usually only one or two seasons in a complete set anyway (I usually do not buy the single volume releases). I have a few of those series sets also like Gunslinger Girl (though there is a second season rumored to be produced), Azumanga Daioh (where my current avatar is from), Full Metal Panic, Full Metal Panic FUMOFFU, Elfen Lied, Midori Days...
Also I have a lot of American series which only had one or two seasons as a complete set.

Yeah, I'm keeping an eye out for those. But I'm waiting for the box set and a sale to buy it.

I just got the shipping confirmation for this  :thundergod:
And here I thought the release date is in another two weeks. But until it gets here, it will take at least that long.

There are pro and cons regarding UK vs. US box set. I have the UK versions and I am happy with it.

The US versions does away with the recaps in the beginning of each episode. Wouldn't be so bad, if they wouldn't have done it also to the season 5 finale "The Gift"  :stars:
Beginning with season 4, the UK sets are anamorphic widescreen. Though Joss says, the episodes are meant to be Full Frame. I am happy with the widescreen version even if the action is mostly in the center of the screen.

The only series that I've bought as a complete set is "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century" and I have just watch one episode of the second seasons. I don't like the way it was changed, but the first season is great so it's not a complete waste of money.

Couldn't agree with you more. The 1st season is great. Classic SciFi TV. The changes they did to the 2nd one were terrible. I had a really hard time finishing it when I watched it.
