New Beta
« on: August 28, 2008, 10:01:57 PM »
It looks like a new version of dvdprofiler is finally release as a beta. I will not getting it yet (it's just a beta and I don't want to create some problem with my phpprofiler). I'm sure that some of you test it already, so what do you think of it? Except for the possibility to add a custom genre anything else interesting or usefull?

I know that a thread about it is already at the other forum, but usually I don't read an 18 pages thread there... I run very very fast from it

Personally I'm not using it yet. There are currently no new changes which interest me. And you cannot contribute with the current beta yet.
I only have taken a look at it to see, what changes to the XML export has been done.

As far as I can see in the XML export, there are no changes which should affect other third-party tools like phpprofiler, which rely on the export file. Only new additional fields have been added.

Well actually, there is something that breaks phpdvdprofiler (I don't know what though) as i had many error codes at the top of the phpdvdprofiler profile page. But the profile itself showed up fine.

Jimmy, it's actually two (or three?) small changes to two files (incupdate.php and index.php) from phpdvdprofiler to make it all good (without the new fields though). So if you didn't customize these two files, I could send you mine. They are the standard files, with the changes made to accomodate the new XML.

I'm using 3.5 exclusively already (I know, I like living on the edge, with the possibility of losing it all! I do have a pre-3.5 backup stored)

Is the change of the genre fields at fault by chance? As far as I remember Ken changed it, that in the XML there are now always 5 genre entries, even if not all are filled.

Thanks for the offer Sebastien, but I prefer to wait before using it. It was hard to get phpprofiler to work at his first instalation and I don't want to have trouble with it yet, at least not untill a general release. Since you already use it, what are your impressions? A big let down or a good surprise.

I remember one of the change is to replace a "!isset" statement, to a "!empty" statement.

Another change has to do with the new HTML codes for bold and italic, which allows them to be rendered, instead of seeing the tags.

Here's the relevant post on phpdvdprofiler forums: http://dvdaholic.me.uk/forums/index.php?topic=557.msg4264#msg4264

Actually, there's a second post related to it: http://dvdaholic.me.uk/forums/index.php?topic=557.msg4255#msg4255

Well.. actually.. I can't tell. For what I do with DVD Profiler, it's all the same to me. I've stopped using most of the features long ago. Now, all I do is scan the UPC in and let it do its thing. I rarely, if ever, edit a profile myself, other than entering some very basic data if the profile is not there. Also, one of the thing that was added, I was doing it long before it was added (bold and italics in overviews)

Yes, this was the main problem. Fred provided one small code change (to be applied DIY for now...) and then it worked flawlessly again.

Well, at least for me. I use 3.5 exclusively already, but I don't change any of the new fields yet (except for one profile, where I wanted to test bold and italics and the new Distributor field). Potentially other new fields could cause a problem, but Fred didn't mention it. I guess they are simply not displayed. Genre was different due to the way the code was reading them from the XML.
