The woman who lives below left me a note saying she's away until June 13th.  I can watch my movies with full sound now without worrying that the sub-woofer will give her a heart attack.

I got in trouble once when I disturbed a neighbor (across the street!) when I played the finale of The Abyss around midnight.

So I recommmend starting with that.

There's still people in the other half of the building.  Maybe I try U-571 a 3:00am, shake the house a bit and make them wake up and go stand under door frames.

Have you got War of the Worlds? When the tripods emerge, it sounds like your house is about to collapse!

I've thought of a new game some of you with close neighbours could play; see who can get the highest number of complaints and reveal how loud you dared go to get them.

Luckily my house is detached, so I have no such problem. Apart from my poor mum whose room visibly rattles. And the lights shake downstairs! When I watched WotW the first time, I had only just had the speakers and the subs default level was too high. As my chair moved itself across the room and my ears started to bleed, my mum came storming upstairs: "What the f*** was that??!!??"  :hysterical: :-[

I have that problem with my system. The sub is adjusted to make so much noise, that I have to keep it on the minimum level, just above completely off, and I still find it overpowering. Guess I should move it elsewhere, but there's nowhere else I can put it in that room

Is it sitting on carpet or a bare floor? I noticed a big difference when I moved from a room with no carpet to a room with carpet. I had to turn it up on the carpeted room. If it's a bare floor perhaps a small piece of carpet would help. Also isolating it from the floor would help. Cut up a mopuse pad into smaller bits and put them under the feet of the sub. That may help.

Seb, where's the speaker output on your sub-woofer ?  On my previous system it was under the box, pointing toward the floor so I could put it anywhere without affecting the results much.

My current one however has the speaker on the right side.  I had put it in a corner to hide it but with that side speaker it made the walls reflect low frequencies even if the speaker wasn't pointing toward one.

I had to move it to the middle of a wall to reduce the vibrations.

It's sitting on a wooden floor, on 4 rubber pads. Thing is, it's right in the corner of the room, and there's my big computer desk right on top of it. So I'm guessing it creates a big reverberating resonance cavity. But like I said, short than putting it in the middle of the room, there's no other logical place to put it.

:hmmmm: Makes sense. And the big sound cone is on the side, pointing straight at a wall.

I'm pretty sure your problem lies right there.

Guess I could try turning it 90° and have the cone pointing toward the center of the room. Like I said, I can't move the damn thing. Might try that tonight (although I got used to it by now, but I'm guessing my upstairs "neighbours" would appreciate it, if it helps.

One sunday afternoon the people who live two floors above mine stood at my door and asked if I could watch with less volume. Their chinaware was trembling.

I believe I was watching Master and Commander.

Yes it will be, because a speakers true capability isn't measured by the cone or power, but by the cabinet it is housed in. By putting it too close to the wall, you turn your room into a giant cabinet!  Same reason you should use proper hooks when wall mounting the satellite speakers.

Oh that is an excellent one for that. Admit it, I bet you felt a twinge of pride for making their china rattle! To be fair, the bass response is more noticeable outside the viewing area area though, especially through walls.

All this reminds me; my Dad's main interest was music and hi-fi. Back in the 60s/70s, he and an old friend/mentor in some ways, would build their own speaker cabinets, amplifiers, etc. His friend told him that in theory, the most perfect speaker cabinet would be a long narrow tube of about 50ft (I still have a cabinet this man built which is made completely from wood, but the very clever design is based on a long tube folded into a box).

Anyway, my Dad told this little fact to one of his friends who rather misunderstood the limitations and placed a very large speaker cone at the bottom of a disused chimney stack in his house. Apparently it sounded fantastic for about ten minutes before the chimney fell in!
