Topic: Mary and Max (attention Critter!)

This looks really good. A claymation film about a lonely Australian girl and her pen-pal relationship with a 44 year old New Yorker. They just talked about it on Film 2010 and it clearly has a lot of charm.

They pitched it as being similar in tone to Little Miss Sunshine. Even Harold and Maude, in a way too.

Well, I've got to admit that while it looks very creative, I found a lot of the humor cheap and rather stretching.

I loved this film when I saw it at the cinema. I also went to a two-hour long talk with the creator himself Adam Elliot in my hometown when he came to visit. It was an amazing day and he is truly and inspiration to me. The story of how he went from being dirt poor and selling wooden frames in street markets, to being an Academy Award winning animator is a great one. It was great hearing it from his own mouth, but if he ever wrote a biography I would be first in line to get it.
Mary and Max was a good film, I wouldn't give it a perfect rating but I still quite enjoyed it, and it had a great soundtrack. I will probably end up getting this one on blu.

EDIT: I have actually seen him speak twice. Last year was when I went to the two-hour speech, but before that he also did a talk at my school. He does a lot of speeches for schools and companies etc around this area. A really funny down to earth guy.

BTW: I especially liked the German addition to the title: "Oder: schrumpfen Schafe wenn es regnet?", which translates to: "Or: Do sheep shrink when it rains?"

I can understand cheap, but part of the appeal for me is that it seems so natural. I really enjoy cheap humour when it's delivered by believable characters who also experience something worthier. Kind of like Kevin Smith movies; though I don't for one moment think of this like a Jay & Silent Bob instalment! It basically comes down to honesty.

Film 2010 showed a trailer slightly different to that one. Mary asks where babies come from in America (in Australia they come in beer glasses! ). Max assuredly replies that, "if you aren't Jewish, they're laid by Catholic nuns. If you're an atheist, they're laid by dirty, lonely prostitutes."

Sophie, you have mentioned Mary and Max a couple of times before, haven't you? I couldn't quite remember, but I'm glad you replied. That's great to be able to hear from the creator. Did you have the opportunity to speak to him?

Yeah Jon I have mentioned it before. When I saw this thread I actually clicked 'M' at the top of the page and went searching for my review, only to find that I haven't posted one. I don't know why I haven't, I saw this film at the cinema and I usually review all films that I see there.
And no, I didn't get the chance to actually speak to Adam Elliot.

There were times when the microphones were passed around the crowd and he answered our questions, but I can never get up the nerve in those situations to actually ask anything. Of all the people I have seen speak though he is my favourite, he was very funny and often had the whole crowd laughing.

Also, seeing him speak twice was interesting. I saw him speak once at my school to  a bunch of kids in year 8, and once at a professional development thing for workers at one of the biggest education places in my state. It was interesting to see how he tailored what he said to the different age groups.
