Next time, after you click the button for the new posts, can you check your address bar and see if the link ends with "topicseen.html#new" ?

My guess is that there's a problem there because the post contains only one line that converts to and image at run time, the browsers and/or forum don't know that this one line of text in a post actually becomes a 300 or 400 pixels high image.
I have recently mainly used the "New Posts" section on the main page to reach unread threads.
I misread your first message. I thought you were dropped to the first post. Have you changed your logging settings recently to automatically login ?If you did it would explain it because the sessions remain active for 10 minutes (or 15, not sure now) when you leave the forum without logging out. The forum has no way to know that you weren't there during those 10 or 15 minutes so if anything is posted during that time it won't show as a new post since last visit because you were still connected.
Another problem is with watched banners in the signatures and the images in the "WhatYaGot" tag. It seems that it confuses the forum and/or the browser and they can't figure out the exact position where a post starts. For instance, if you go to Jimmy's List of reviews and click on a link you will often end up a few posts below. I tested that with a special skin I created that doesn't show the signatures and it seems that I was closer to the correct post but still below it.
