New posts
« on: August 01, 2008, 12:33:34 PM »
For about a week now I have had problems getting to the new posts in a thread. Instead of the first of the new ones I am actually dropped to the last post of the thread.

I watched this for a while, making sure I get this right. But today I am sure, as I was dropped to the first post on a new page, while there wwere actually unread posts on the previous page...

Next time, after you click the button for the new posts, can you check your address bar and see if the link ends with "topicseen.html#new" ?

Yes, it does end with that.

Then I can only think of one thing, your cache files.  Maybe cleaning them would fix the problem.

I cleared the cache and will watch what happens.

If it still isn't better I will try a few other browser (Safari, even IE); now using Firefox for OS X.

O.k., just clearing the cache did not help. When I came back to the board after commenting in the Oh boy thread earlier on I was presented directly with page 4 even there there was one new post also on page 3.

I have recently mainly used the "New Posts" section on the main page to reach unread threads. I will now first see if reading the board by actually going to the subforums and then open ing the threads makes a difference. Then I would test other browsers.

I misread your first message.  I thought you were dropped to the first post.  Have you changed your logging settings recently to automatically login ?

If you did it would explain it because the sessions remain active for 10 minutes (or 15, not sure now) when you leave the forum without logging out.

The forum has no way to know that you weren't there during those 10 or 15 minutes so if anything is posted during that time it won't show as a new post since last visit because you were still connected.

Another problem is with watched banners in the signatures and the images in the "WhatYaGot" tag.  It seems that it confuses the forum and/or the browser and they can't figure out the exact position where a post starts.  For instance, if you go to Jimmy's List of reviews and click on a link you will often end up a few posts below.  I tested that with a special skin I created that doesn't show the signatures and it seems that I was closer to the correct post but still below it.

My guess is that there's a problem there because the post contains only one line that converts to and image at run time, the browsers and/or forum don't know that this one line of text in a post actually becomes a 300 or 400 pixels high image.

I'm guessing the browser is at fault here. It probably download the forum page, positions itself at the right post, and then the external images start appearing, which throws off the post position.

I have recently mainly used the "New Posts" section on the main page to reach unread threads.
The new post section "Recent Topics" on the main page always directs directly to the last post of the thread (the one mentioned in the new post entry).
You'll have to use the "Show unread posts since last visit.". From there it should work correctly. At least it always has been the way for me.

That's the way I see it, too.

From
Show unread posts since last visit. http://www.dvdcollectorsonline.com/index.php?action=unread;all;start=0;c=3,4,5,9,10,11
the small icon

leads currently to
http://www.dvdcollectorsonline.com/index.php/topic,2315.msg77020/topicseen.html#msg77020
for me.

If I click on the main page on
Re: New posts
it leads to
http://www.dvdcollectorsonline.com/index.php/topic,2315.msg77021.html#new

Notice the different pahe anchors ("#") and the additional /topicseen.html in the first link

Same again with this thread. Instead of presented with your post I was looking at Karsten's and had to scroll up... (and at work, meaning I used IE...).

No. I always log properly in and out. I do this on all forums I visit (except one, actually). Of course I occasionally forget, but not all the time...

I would buy into this, but I get occasionally on the "next page"! That certainly cannot be related to the image sizes. Also, especially at work in IE, if I don't scroll while the page loads, it will first shift around according the images being loaded and when done it will shift back to the newest post (well, it used to).

I may misunderstand, karsten, but are you confirming that something weird is going on and have the same problems as I?

First the good news: I found the source of my problem.

thanks to Karsten's post I remembered that I wanted to browse the forum "normally" today instead of using the Recent Topics window on the main page. And as he posted the links are actually different.

Recent Topics:
http://www.dvdcollectorsonline.com/index.php/topic,2411.msg77016/topicseen.html#new

Forum:
http://www.dvdcollectorsonline.com/index.php/topic,2411.msg77016.html#new

So, now I get it; especially since the above links both work properly ;)

The Recent Topics list shows us the latest posts on a per thread basis. Clicking on them will bring us to those posts, but not necessarily to the last unread post of that thread. Obviously browsing the forum and clicking on "new" buttons for threads will bring us to the first unread post. I just thought I remembered the recent Topics to do the same, but maybe I am wrong...

Thanks all for your help!
