July Movie Marathon

Musicals

OMG! What was I thinking!?!
A while back ago Danae Cassandra and I was sitting at the breakfast table talking about stuff when the time I freaked everyone out and watched a whole weekend of musicals. Without thinking I spurted out "How do you think they would react if I did one of my month long marathons with musicals?" And the next thing I knew we  were all planning it for July.

So *GULP* you can read both our reviews here in this thread. Some movies we will be watching together. Other films she may watch on her own and some I may watch on my own. The family here is having fun with the idea of torturing me for the entire month...some even betting on how many I will actually get watched. Brittany had no faith in me and says I might get in 6 the entire month. Others are thinking maybe 12. What do I think? No idea... but I would love to see their faces if I got in 31... would be an average of 1 a day! Not saying it will happen... but maybe it would shut them up! LOL

Lots of great movies. There are several that I would say are only marginally musicals. Really hard to pick.

For some reason I get the feeling that Danae likes musicals a little bit more than you do.

I'd agree some are only marginally musicals.  There are a lot of Roy Rogers pictures listed.

I actually do want to fit in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang... as I always liked Dick Van Dyke and Not sure if I ever seen that one or not. If I did I was so young I don't remember it at all.

My Thoughts:

This one took a bit for me to get through. The idea for the story line is good... I remember enjoying the story line of the original. But I am not all that thrilled with the execution of it. Sure the kids are talented but they didn't flesh out the kids enough to make you care about them. Now maybe this is because there is so many of them you need to follow in such a movie but I found myself only caring about one or two of the students. And in my opinion at least...they should have been able to do a little better then that.

 One of the things I hate about musicals is how people burst out into song for no reason what so ever... at least in this story that makes sense. But in the case of this film I found it to be no more then average which made it all that more difficult for me to get through the whole musical aspect. Not one I feel comfortable recommending... if the story line sounds good to you go with the 1980 original.

Xena: Warrior Princess - Season 2 Episode 4: Girls Just Wanna Have Fun
Xena is forced to take on the Bacchae - bloodthirsty minions of the wine god, Bacchus - to get to their power-hungry leader and foil his plan to take over the world.

My Thoughts:
While this I wouldn't actually consider this one as a musical... there is enough music in it that I will let it count. I enjoyed this episode. More so for the Bachae then anything else. Which is very similar to vampires. They survive by feeding on blood... have fangs... the works. Definitely worth the time put in to watch it.

My Thoughts:

This is one I enjoyed quite a bit... actually more then I thought I would. It helps that this one was right funny. Was never familiar with Donald O'Connor before this film but he reminds me of another classic actor I like a lot. He reminds me a lot od Dick Van Dyke in his style of humor. I would say this is worth the time put in to watch it. I can even see myself adding it to my collection at some point.

My Thoughts:
This is a near perfect film.  It has a great story, great performances, a lot of chemistry between its characters, memorable songs and beautiful choreography.  It's also a lot of fun to watch.  There's nothing particularly serious here; it's light, romantic and amusing.  O'Connor's "Make 'Em Laugh" is great, and Kelly's "Singin' in the Rain" is classic Hollywood. 

An absolute must-see for fans of musicals, or American film; this is one of the best examples of a big-budget, classic Hollywood musical.  Highly recommended.

That '70s Show - Season 4 Episode 24: That '70s Musical
Fez is hurt and upset when he thinks the gang can't be bothered to come hear him sing in the school's spring concert.

My Thoughts:
Now I don't watch many musicals to know how common this is. But it at least seemed different to me that they used actual hits from the '70s instead of music made for the show itself. I thought that was a good idea and hope to see more like it through-out the marathon.
