Dr. Phibes Rises Again!
UPC 5-027035-011905 | United Kingdom 1972 | 89 minutes | Arrow Video, Hollywood Classics, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer

The Abonimable Dr. Phibes is back - and still looking to resurrect his beloved wife, Victoria. His quest takes him to Egypt in search of a Pharaoh's tomb and the Rivers of Life that will bring her back to him.

The Egyptian setting provides Dr. Phibes Rises Again with an air of adventure - the film paying affectionate if slightly camp homage to the cliffhanger serials of the 1930s and the ripping yarns if H. Rider Haggard.

Boasting a stariier cast than the original film, Dr. Phibes Rises Again sees Vincent Price joined by an impressive roster of familiar faces, including fellow horror icon Peter Cushing (The Curse of Frankenstein, Dracula), Robert Quarry (Count Yorga, Vampire), Fiona Lewis (The Fury), Beryl Reid (Psychomania) and a young John Thaw.

Mona Lisa
UPC 5-027035-012773 | United Kingdom 1986 | 104 minutes | Arrow Video, Arrow Films

Five years after The Long Good Friday, Bob Hoskins returned to the gangster genre, but his character George is a mere underling this time, a chauffeur hired by a mesmerisingly slimy gangland kingpin (Michael Caine) to transport a high-class prostitute (Cathy Tyson) from client to client. When she enlists his help in tracking down an old friend, George finds himself exploring a hellish underworld that he never imagined existed.

Hoskins’ immensely complex, subtle and moving performance hoovered up almost every Best Actor award going (Cannes, a BAFTA, a Golden Globe) and remains one of his greatest roles – a man sucked by circumstance into a life of crime but still righteous enough to seize the opportunity to do good when it presents itself.

Director Neil Jordan (The Company of Wolves, The Crying Game) and co-writer David Leland (Made in Britain) achieve a perfect blend of hard-edged realism and unexpected fantasy, with the regular appearance of the Nat King Cole title song turning seedy British locations (Soho, Brighton) into something far more romantically evocative.

The Zero Boys
UPC 5-027035-014272 | United States 1986 | 89 minutes | Arrow Video

From cult director Nico Mastorakis, the man behind such eclectic offerings as the controversial Island of Death and the Oliver Reed-starring actioner Hired to Kill, comes The Zero Boys the genre-bending 80s classic with gruesome sequences that anticipate the torture porn horrors of Hostel and Saw.

For a group of young friends, a weekend of survival games in the wilderness turns into a genuine battle of life and death when one of their number turns up dead. Finding themselves hunted by a bloodthirsty band of maniacs intent on slaughtering them one-by-one, the self-styled Zero Boys must now play their war games for real.

Starring Kelli Maroney (Night of the Comet, Chopping Mall) and featuring an early score from the legendary Hans Zimmer (Inception, The Dark Knight Trilogy), The Zero Boys mixes action, survival and all-out slasher movie elements in a thrilling horror yarn that falls somewhere between Friday the 13th and Deliverance.

Hired to Kill
UPC 5-027035-014692 | United States 1990 | 96 minutes |

Starring legendary actors Oliver Reed (Gladiator, The Brood) and George Kennedy (The Delta Force and the Naked Gun series), Hired to Kill is a hugely entertaining action flick featuring guns, girls and a plethora of budget-busting explosions for good measure.

Action movie staple Brian Thompson (Cobra) stars as Frank Ryan, a mercenary sent to track down a rebel leader in hostile territory. Posing as a fashion designer, he'll be aided by a posse of beautiful — but deadly — women.

Whilst the opportunity to see Oliver Reed chewing up the scenery behind an elaborate moustache merits the price of admission alone, Hired to Kill is also noteworthy as being co-directed by Nico Mastorakis —the man behind such cult favourites as Island of Death and The Zero Boys.

Theirs is the Glory
UPC 5-060105-721885 | United Kingdom 1946 | 79 minutes | Carlton Film Distributors, ITV Studios Home Entertainment, Strawberry Media

After sweeping through France and Belgium in the summer of 1944, the allies were poised to enter the Netherlands. Field Marshall Montgomery favoured a single thrust north over the Rhine to attack the Ruhr with the aim of winning the War by the end of 1944.

To achieve their objective the allies launched "Operation Market Garden" on 17th September 1944. Paratroopers were dropped behind enemy lines led by First British Airbourne Division at Arnhem. The objective being to secure a crossing of the Lower Rhine and link up with ground troops who would follow through.

From the start the operation ran into difficulties. The paratroopers ran into stiff German resistance and quickly became trapped in a pocket just north of the river. The paratroopers suffered heavy casualties and were withdrawn after 9 days of heavy fighting.

'Theirs is the Glory' was produced one year after The Battle of Arnhem and is a unique account in that it was filmed entirely without the use of studio sets or actors. The film cleverly weaves original footage with re-enactments shot on location in Arnhem featuring the men from the Airbourne Regiment who actually  fought – in the battle.

This film is a tribute to every man who fought at Arnhem and an everlasting memorial to those who gave their lives.

Frontline: Country Boys
| Year: 2005 | 335 min. | United States

COUNTRY BOYS is a moving portrait of the trials and triumphs of Chris Johnson and Cody Perkisn, two teenaged boys coming of age in eastern Kentucky's Appalacian hills.  Cody and Chris are classmates at an alternative high school who inhabit the same world yet are light years apart.  Cody is an orphan.  After being passed among relatives, Cody chooses to live with his former step-grandmother, who opens her heart and home to the lost youth.  Chris, meanwhile, lives in a rundown trailer with his family.  With both parents often abset, Chris find himself thrust into the role of caretaker—emotionally supporting his sibilings while his diability check and string of low-paying jobs financially support the family.

The film documents Chris and Cody's struggles to overcome dysfunction and poverty and to find meaning in their lives.  For Cody, that sense of belonging is found through his heavy metal Christian band, his faith in God, and his relationship with his girlfriend Jessica.  Chris, however, is torn between his devotion to his family and a desperate need for an education.  He searches, often in vain, to find a path where he can meet all his family responsibilities without losing his sense of self.

COUNTRY BOYS is an intimate story of all that exquisite twilight of adolescence, when all young people find themselves caught between who they are and who they could become.

The Return
| Year: 2003 | 106 min. | Russia

Declared "luminously beautiful" by the 'New York Times', Andrey Zvyagintsev's 'THE RETURN' is a stunning mixture of visionary allegory, urgent suspense and road movie momentum. Zvyagintsev's equal skill with lush visuals, lucid storytelling and breathtaking realism easily netted 'THE RETURN' the prestigious Golden Lion and the Best First Feature Film Award at the Venice International Film Festival.

Within the emotional vacuum of a fatherless childhood, young brothers Andrei (Vladimir Garin) and Ivan (Ivan Dobronravov) have grown closer than most siblings. But when they least expect it, the father the boys have never known returns. Under the cool midnight sun of a coastal Russian summer, Andrei and Ivan eagerly hop into a car for a week long fishing trip with a complete stranger they desperately need to believe is their father. But as they travel deeper into the Russian wilderness, their journey devolves from vacation to boot camp to father-sons love triangle and ultimately to a test of wills that pushes to the brink of violence. As it dawns on the boys that the man who could be their father might be trying to abandon, exploit or kill them, 'THE RETURN'S' Jungian landscape gives way to fervid Freudian rage, shocking loss and bittersweet redemption.

Harried as one of the most auspicious film debuts since 'BADLANDS' or 'THE 400 BLOWS', 'THE RETURN' is both a gorgeous contemporary thriller and an astute updating of vanguard Soviet filmmaking. Disturbing, tender, transcendent, 'THE RETURN'S' skillful marriage of psychological complexity to mythic imagery effortlessly evokes the watershed films of Andrei Tarkovsky and Roman Polanski.
If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.

Inside Llewyn Davis
| Year: 2013 | 105 min. | United States

The visionary chroniclers of eccentric Americana Joel and Ethan Coen present one of their greatest creations in Llewyn Davis, a singer barely eking out a living on the peripheries of the flourishing Greenwich Village folk scene of the early sixties. As embodied by Oscar Isaac in a revelatory performance, Llewyn (loosely modeled on the Village folk legend Dave Van Ronk) is extraordinarily talented but also irascible, rude, and self-defeating. His circular odyssey through an unforgiving winter cityscape, evocatively captured by cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel, is realized with poignant humor and the occasional surreal touch. Featuring a folk soundtrack curated by T Bone Burnett, Inside Llewyn Davis reminds us that in the Coens' world, history isn't necessarily written by the winners.
