Batman V Superman .. Really??
« on: April 24, 2015, 04:01:43 PM »
Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice I haven't seen this mentioned yet so thought I would put in a quick  ... ???REALLY??? Ben "I can't act" Aflack (sic) again.  Is he to superheros what Summer Glau is to SciFi?  (poor ole summer).  Superman has always been a problem for me.  Except for krytonite (all sorts of colors) and others from Krypton .. what does Superman have to be afraid of?  And what chance does Batman against him (again especially someone like ben aflack .. he does better as a duck).  Sure this might draw some skepticism .. will be happy to discuss but just wondering WTH
Thank you
David

I don't have a problem with Ben as Bats because I know he can act. Yes I know he made some poor-choice films but I do know that he can act when he wants to.

What I do have a problem with is Snyder and his absolute failure to understand who Superman is and what he is about.

And this trailer shows me that this is going to be the movie's biggest failure.

For example, I'm a fan of Superman Returns. I know it's not the most liked film but I like it.

Even though Clark is again a bumbler, Metropolis-Clark is not long enough in the movie to be a downer. I like a Clark who can stand up for himself, who has his own opinion and is not a caricature of a real person. Basically, I like Lois & Clark and Smallville Clark. And when he's in Smallville, Superman Returns Clark is also that kind of person.

For example, when you rewatch the pilot of Lois & Clark, there is this scene where a scientist was murded by electrocution to make it look like suicide. There's a cop at the scene who makes barbecue jokes and Clark really gets into his face, letting him know what he thinks of that.

Man of Steel was a garbled mess of messages. First on Krypton, then with Jonathan. On Krypton everyone seemed to know that the planet was going to die and yet no one besides Jor-El and Zod seemed to be inclined to do anything about it. And even Zod had only the conquering of a dying planet in mind. His imprisonment was the only thing keeping him alive, which in Superman: The Movie was more of an accident because no one besides Jor-El seemed to believe in the doomsday scenario. But in Man of Steel it's explicitly stated that they know that they destabilized their own planet's core and yet the shrug it of because they needed the energy.

Then on Earth Clark gets to hear all his life two very contradictory messages. The first is that he must never ever under any circumstances reveal his powers or true origins. Jonathan even ponders if he should have let some kid die because he almost revealed himself. Jonathan even sacrificed himself for some stupid dog instead of letting Clark helping him and explaining away any extraordinary thing anyone could have seen (as if they weren't too concerned with their own safety with a tornado that close).
On the other hand Jonathan tells him that he's going to change the world and that people will look to him. How would that work if Clark had never needed to come out?

Supes killing Zod? That was one of the things I didn't have a problem with because this was a life-or-death combat situation. Supes has killed before, even the movie Zod before that (Superman II). It should be hard for him and nothing he does off-handedly or with a one-liner on his lips, but if need be, then so be it.

But again, the movie had so many mixed messages (Perry not publishing the biggest story in history because people might feel uncomfortable) and way too long battle sequences at the end. It just turned into destruction porn.

Here's a cool video that might make you see Superman Returns with new eyes:

Oh I agree .. I liked Superman Returns.  I am a big fan of the first 2 Superman movies .. before they went way off the track.  I just never been a big fan of Superman .. even as a kid.  As soon as I found Marvel .. off I went.  Their characters appeared to be more damaged or conflicted.  Like the Dark Knight of old.
I do have to wonder if you meant to type that " .. Ben as Bats because I know he can act .. ".  I know .. we all have our guilty pleasures :0 but saying he can act might be going a bit far  :hysterical:
I just don't see why Superman fighting Batman could be that good .. in the real world.  Unless Batman has kryptonite what is he going to do to hurt Superman?  There is nothing he can do .. he had trouble with Bain <G>
I will probably go see cause I am a sucker for superheroes .. anything scifi/fantasy (except Into the Woods).  Just saying ...
Thank you
David

Me too, quite liked Superman Returns. Not a great film, but certainly not as bad as many want you to think. I agree with Karsten's problems regarding Man of Steel.

I was fine with Affleck in the trailer. Although there was just a brooding look, really. I liked the moment where Superman is asked if he bleeds; I noticed some internet buzz of people questioning that it was Batman's voice, the trailer may only want you to believe that.

I understand Batman defeated Superman in the comics before (not sure if Kryptonite was involved), so there's that.

All in all, this trailer lowered my expectations and excitement for this film... :-\
