Charmed/Hex
« on: April 28, 2008, 06:30:22 AM »

Can anyone please give me a fair insight into either or both of these tv series? No offense intended, but I have always been skeptical about watching either of them as I thought they might be too "chick-flicky." However, I have an open mind and have been thinking about getting into them as they seem similar to Buffy/Angel, of which I am a big fan. I have been reading here that many really like Charmed, so I am hoping to hear the reasons. Thanks.

I only watched the first couple of episodes of Hex because I found it to be really annoying.  Don't get me wrong the idea has a lot of potential but it just didn't deliver.

Charmed on the other hand, is a really good series and I highly recommend it.  Although I hasten to add that I have not watched the last 2 seasons.

I never got to see HEX... but it is on my list.

Charmed quickly became one of my favorite shows... I was personally hooked from the pilot episode. It does have it's moments of feeling some like a chick-flick... but not bad at all. mostly dealing with their relationships and if they can actually find love after finding out they are witches in the beginning... and then through-out trying to find the right guy. But that is all second to the main storyline of the witches fighting demons and such.

I personally loved the series from pilot to the series finale. But I believe I am one of the few on that... some people felt only up to season 3 others stopped around season 5. Of course like any series... this one has it's ups and downs. But it is definitely worth it... I would also Highly Recommend it. :)

There is a thread on Charmed somewhere; when I get a little more free time I'll look for it again.

Personally, I have never seen either of them but they do sound interesting. I'm afraid Jon has rubbed off on me a bit; I'm trying to catch up on my "unwatched" pile. Of course if there's something I just can't resist I will give in and buy it!

addicted2dvd's Charmed Marathon

PS: I am quite sure I've read Charmed disc reviews outside addicted's thread but I don't know where to look.

some people [..] stopped around season 5.

Well, there's at least one (Jimmy) that finally decided to give Season 6 a go, and is now up to Season 7. And from his last comment, he's enjoying it! :)

I've never seen, or even heard of, Hex. So can't help you there.

As for Charmed, it took a few episodes when I first started watching, but it grew on me. I also almost abandoned during Season 5, but since I had already bought it all to Season 8 by the time I was watching Season 5, I gave S6 a go and loved it! Can't wait to get to S7.

What makes it work? I really don't know, but it just does.

Hex is quite a bit darker than Charmed. And while both have strong female leads I wouldn't call either chick-flicky.

I must watch all 8 series of charmed sometime soon. Not seen the last 1.5 of them.

As for Hex, I watched the 1st series while on tv. It was rather interesting. Think a cross between The Omen and Charmed ;)

Not watched the 2nd series, but no doubt at sometime I'll watch them back to back.

I think that we are many fans of Charmed here and many of us are guys... so it's not a girl show

I have the complete series and I've almost watch it completly (I'm at the last season), but since I have many unwatched films to see I've decided to wait a little bit.

The first 3 seasons are the best, I'm a fan of Shannen Doherty and I've almost give up when she left. If you forget the season 5, Charmed continue to be good without her. Maybe I'm wrong but I think that the serie became less serious with the season 4 (this is not a critic I like them, except the fifth one for the same reason that you can read in the Sebastien reviews). The beginning of the season 7 is the best episodes that I've seen, but I think that I know why.

Question for those who have already seen this season :

You can't go wrong with Charmed, try one season and you will probably end hook on it like many of us.

To set a counterpoint: I've watched the pilot and wasn't too eager to continue. But I've only watched the pilot and I've already bought the first four seasons and one day I will watch them.

To get the most out of Charmed, read a list of all the episode titles. They are mildly funny. Avoid watching the show. It is incredible boring.

As for Hex, the first season (6 episodes) is watchable, but not great. Only Jemima Rooper (Thelma) shines. The 2nd season is a convoluted mess, which even Rooper cannot save.

I got tricked into blind-buying both seasons of Hex due to some people calling it the "British Buffy". It really is not. If you are looking for something where the Buffy comparison has some justification, try Veronica Mars - even if it is not a fantasy show.

Charmed I watched the first four and half seasons. It never really got to be a must-see for me. As I didn't like the character Prue played by Shannon Doherty, I really got into the show with season 4. But with season 5 it looked like they didn't know anymore what they are doing and I quit watching the show.

As for Hex: I saw the first series when it aired. It never really caught on with me.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I too have a pile of unwatched stuff but for some reason I am kind of on a tv series kick right now and it would be nice to watch something I have never seen. I thought it might be nice to try one of these two series since if I do like them I caqn keep getting all the seasons instead of trying to wait for newer seasons to come out, like my Smallville and BSG collections... As of now I am watching Enterprise for the first time, into season two currently...

Today I watched the pilot for the second time and I still didn't really get into it. It all went to smooth, to fast.

Alyssa's character accepted that whole "witch" idea to fast for my taste, without questioning and that in a world where magic isn't somehow obvious. But the other sisters didn't freak out either when they learned the truth about themselves.

And then there was this bad guy and they just "hey, let's hold hands and we'll defeat him".

As I said, to quick, to smooth for my taste. Just let's take Buffy's pilot as comparison. OK, Buffy knew already about her fate but even in the movie she had a hard time accepting it. And Xander didn't believe a word of what he was hearing until he saw a real vampire and that totally freaked him out (Xander: "We're having a talk with 'vampires' in it!"). They even pointed out by the end of the episode that it's incredible that the people returned to their life as if nothing had happened.
