Picked up all the following in trades at my shop & our sister shop on New Cut Rd.

The Imitation Game
| Year: 2014 | 114 min. | United States

During the winter of 1952, British authorities entered the home of mathematician, cryptanalyst and war hero Alan Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch) to investigate a reported burglary. They instead ended up arresting Turing himself on charges of 'gross indecency,' an accusation that would lead to his devastating conviction for the criminal offense of homosexuality – little did officials know, they were actually incriminating the pioneer of modern-day computing.

Famously leading a motley group of scholars, linguists, chess champions and intelligence officers, he was credited with cracking the so-called unbreakable codes of Germany's World War II Engima machine. An intense and haunting portrayal of a brilliant, complicated man, The Imitation Game follows a genius who under nail-biting pressure helped to shorten the war and, in turn, save millions of lives.

With Jane fighting tirelessly by his side, Stephen embarks on his most ambitious scientific work, studying the very thing he now has precious little of – time. Together, they defy impossible odds, breaking new ground in medicine and science, and achieving more than they could ever have dreamed. The film is based on the memoir Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen, by Jane Hawking, and is directed by Academy Award® winner* James Marsh (Man on Wire).

The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie
| Year: 1972 | 101 min. | France

In Luis Bunuel's deliciously satiric masterpiece, an upper-class sextet sits down to dinner but never eats, their attempts continually thwarted by a vaudevillian mixture of events both actual and imagined. Fernando Rey, Stephane Audran, Delphine Seyrig, and Jean-Pierre Cassel head the extraordinary cast of this 1972 Oscar winner for best foreign film. On the occasion of Bunuel's 100th birthday, Criterion is proud to present The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie in an exclusive special-edition double-disc set.

The Shooting / Ride in the Whirlwind
| Year: 1966 | 163 min. | United States

In the midsixties, the maverick American director Monte Hellman conceived of two westerns at the same time. Dreamlike and gritty by turns, these films would prove their maker's adeptness at brilliantly deconstructing genre. Shot back-to-back for famed producer Roger Corman, they feature overlapping casts and crews, including Jack Nicholson in two of his meatiest early roles. The Shooting, about a motley assortment of loners following a mysterious wanted man through a desolate frontier, and Ride in the Whirlwind, about a group of cowhands pursued by vigilantes for crimes they did not commit, are rigorous, artful, and wholly unconventional journeys to the Old West.

Thoroughbred: Born to Run
| Year: 2010 | 105 min. | United States

Following a diverse group of individuals and horses for a year leading up to the 2009 Kentucky Derby, THOROUGHBRED is a timeless film that captures the beauty of the breed, the thrilling nature of the sport, and the deep reservoir of history and tradition behind this equine wonder.  Directed by Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Paul Wagner, THOROUGHBRED ranges from Central Kentucky to Dubai to trace the breed's fascinating history and to meet the people who breed them, sell them, race them, and love them.  From foaling barn to finish line, this documentary explores the story of this remarkable animal, its unique bond with humans, and the unparalleled spirit of competition that imbues the story of the Thoroughbred with power and meaning.

The Taking of Pelham One Two Three
| Year: 1974 | 104 min. | United States

WALTER MATTHAU, ROBERT SHAW and MARTIN BALSAM lead an all-star cast in this "gripping and exciting" (The Hollywood Reporter) suspense film based on the sizzling best seller by John Godey.

A gang of thugs who have hijacked a subway train near New York's Pelham Station threaten to kill one hostage per minute. Forced to stall the assailants until a ransom is delivered or a rescue made, transit chief Lt. Garber (Matthau) must somehow ad-lib, con and outmaneuver one of the craftiest, cruelest villains (Shaw) ever. It's a race against time, and no one knows whether things will end heroically or tragically in this pulse-pounding thrill ride!

Sid & Nancy
| Year: 1986 | 113 min. | United Kingdom

Gary Oldman (Batman Begins) and Chloe Webb (The Newton Boys) execute performances that are "nothing short of phenomenal" (Los Angeles Times) as Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious and his unforgettable junkie girlfriend – two social misfits who literally love each other to death. In this "riveting biography of burnt-out icons" (The Washington Post), award-winning writer/director Alex Cox* (Repo Man) creates a "great film" (Siskel & Ebert) about the destructive lives of two 1970's punk legends.

Their love affair is one of pure devotion. Sid falls hard for groupie Nancy Spungen, who seduces him with her affection – and addiction to heroin. Their inseperable bond – to each other and their drugs – eventually corrodes the band, sending Sid and Nancy down a dark road of despair. Out of money, hope and options, the despondent two hit rock bottom while living in squalor as New York's infamous Chelsea Hotel. But their journey takes yet another tragic turn as they face their final curtain – and attempt to fulfill their destiny of going out in a blaze of glory!

*1986: Critics Award, Sao Paulo International Film Festival

The Birdcage
| Year: 1996 | 119 min. | United States

Robin Williams and Nathan Lane team up with a top-notch cast in this hilarious comedy. Williams delivers an uproarious performance as Armand, a gay cabaret owner whose son announces he's marrying the daughter of a right-wing politician (Gene Hackman). It's an outrageously funny culture clash as Armand and his drag-queen partner Albert (Lane) try to transform themselves into straight shooters at a dinner party and pull the chiffon over the eyes of the uptight senator and his wife (Dianne Wiest).

Airplane!
| Year: 1980 | 87 min. | United States

Voted "one of the the 10 funniest movies ever made" by the American Film Insitute, "Airplane!" is a masterpiece of off-the-wall comedy. Featuring Robert Hays as an ex-fighter pilot forced to take over the controls of an airliner when the flight crew succumbs to food poisoning; Julie Hagerty as his girlfriend/stewardess/co-pilot; and a cast of all-stars including Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, Leslie Nielsen, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar...and more! Their hilarious high jinks spoof airplane disaster flicks, religious zealots, television commercials, romantic love... the lists whirl by in rapid succession. And the story races from one moment of zany fun to the next!
If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.

Sabotage
UPC 5-027626-802141 | United Kingdom 1936 | 77 minutes | Network, ITV Studios Global Entertainment

Celebrated for the macabre, tour-de-force plots and sublime twist endings that would come to define the very genre of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock is one of cinema’s greatest auteurs, his career spanning six decades and over sixty films. Based on Joseph Conrad’s The Secret Agent and starring Oscar Homolka and Sylvia Sidney, Sabotage is one of Hitchcock‘s most significant pre-war British films. Featured here in a High Definition transfer from original film elements, this classic early thriller has never looked better.

Karl Verloc, manager of a London cinema, is secretly involved with a gang of European saboteurs who are plotting a massive bomb attack in Piccadilly Circus. With the police already suspicious ot Verloc, they place an undercover detective on his trail – can he bring the saboteurs to justice before they perpetrate their outrage on London?

Dixon of Dock Green
UPC 5-036193-030345 | United Kingdom 1970 | 284 minutes | Acorn Media

One of the longest-running police series on British television, shown between 1955 and 1976, Dixon of Dock Green was also the best-loved. Starring the popular Jack Warner in the role of Sergeant George Dixon, the series set the tone for television police drama and paved the way for all that would follow. Filmed on set and on location around the fast disappearing dockland community of London's East End, the character of Dixon, with his friendly and informal ‘Evening all’, offered viewers the kind of policeman you'd be tempted to welcome into your home for a cup of tea - even if you'd just robbed a bank.

In these first six available colour episodes, the Dock Green police must deal with cases as diverse as a vanished policeman, a mysterious assailant of young women, police protection of a witness to murder, a charming crook with friends in the right places, the hidden world of domestic violence and the police shooting of an unarmed criminal.

In a modern world of DNA and CCTV, much has changed and much remains the same in the still-gripping and utterly compelling episodes of Dixon of Dock Green.

Waste Land (1970)
