OverviewReturning to Earth, the Doctor, Sarah and Harry arrive in the Scottish Highlands to investigate the mysterious destruction of several oil rigs in the North Sea. Local superstition speaks of a deadly threat that lurks in the mists on Tulloch Moor, but the truth is even more disturbing: the legendary Loch Ness Monster is a terrifying cyborg beast which is controlled by the Zygons, an advanced alien race who are desperate to ensure their own survival, at any cost...
My thoughtsWould you believe it? The Loch Ness monster is actually a Zygon cyborg, hidden away in the dark depths of the loch. Well, at least according to this episode of the classic Doctor Who with Tom Baker as the good Doctor.

Actually,  this is an excellent classic Doctor Who episode. The Zygons' home planet has been destroyed and now they are looking for a new planet to take over. Ok, so it's not the most original sci-fi plot, but who cares (pun not intended)?

The Zygons are quite interesting looking aliens. Rather menacing with eerie voices. A bit arrogant, perhaps, to think that the six of them could conquer the world. No more than two are ever seen in their original alien form. They are shape shifters, you see, so they can impersonate human beings that they have caught and imprisoned. They have this really cool looking spaceship hidden under the sea. That seems familiar, somehow...

All this takes part in the Sussex part of Scotland. Well, one has to give the location scout credit for finding places in Sussex that actually look like it might be Scotland. The direction, the acting, the sets, everything is very good, especially for a TV show with quite a limited budget. The only disappointment is the Skarasen (the one we usually know as Nessie). It couldn't act its way out of a paper bag, and it's rather poorly integrated with the rest of the action.

Apparently this was originally planned to be a six part episode, but it was trimmed down to four parts. It works fine, though. Things move along in a brisk pace. For those of us who like the look of the classic Doctor Who, this is a totally enjoyable show. Very highly recommended
